According to Media By Numbers LLC (estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters) Universal’s “Hellboy” sequel, starring Ron Perlman took over the top spot raking in $35.9 million while Will Smith’s superhero tale “Hancock,” slipped to second place with $33 million. But check it… Sony’s “Hancock” raised its domestic total to $165 million. Not bad for big Willie, but keep reading.

“Journey to the Center of the Earth,” New Line’s underground adventure shot in digital 3-D and starring Brendan Fraser took the number No. 3 spot making $20.6 million during it’s opening.

Wait a minute!

Where’s Eddie?? Didn’t Eddie Murphy have a movie opening this weekend??

Well, yes he did….”Meet Dave,” a 20th Century Fox release that took in just $5.3 million, came in at number 7. What happened here? Well, the movie features Eddie in dual roles as a tiny alien and his spaceship which is designed to resemble a full-sized human for a visit to Earth. Hmmm…

Opening at number 7 and bringing in only $5.3 million… I think it is safe to say that this was a bust. Says Bert Livingston, distribution executive at 20th Century Fox, “It was a tough concept to get across,…It’s upsetting for all of us and for Eddie. He’s very funny in this. Just not enough people came.”

This movie cost about $55 million to make. Ouch!?! Talk about taking a loss! Edddie says he’s thinking of returning to stand-up. Now may be a good time!
