The infamous Wendy Williams has a new talk show on daytime tv, called “The Wendy Williams Show.” This particular clip shows her interview with Omarosa (from The Apprentice) discussing her new book. Now this video wasn’t placed here for your messy gossip pleasure. But fortunately, it does include a brief yet important message from Omarosa regarding NEGOTIATION.

Negotiating affects everyone’s life in any capacity you can think of. In the entertainment world, having the ability to negotiate can really benefit you. Whether you’re renegotiating your job salary (as Omarosa mentioned) or trying to get the most profitable record deal, being able to eloquently discuss what it is that makes you valuable is important. As you prepare to negotiate, make sure you have all of your “ducks in a row” or job highlights together. Most people make the mistake of not being equipped with the necessary information needed in order to persuade the other party. For example, if you are trying to get a pay raise or promotion, put together a Word document listing the following:

  • new job duties beyond what your job description says
  • job accomplishments / mid-year or annual performance review results
  • additional training completed, certifications, or degrees
  • professional organizations you are a member of
  • internal special project teams you are a part of
  • current salary
  • your “wish” salary
  • job comparison chart listing the similarities of other high paying jobs that are responsible for the same tasks you do on a daily basis

The more back-up information and documentation you have to justify why you should get the raise or promotion, the better off you will be. Also, remember to start off at your high mark. Most of the time, your boss will already have a number in mind he or she is willing to negotiate with (that is if you are deserving of the salary increase). So having enough wiggle room to negotiate is a good thing.
