The 80’s hit movie “Steel Magnolias” is about to get a major uplift.  The Lifetime Network will soon begin filming in Atlanta with guest what…an all-black cast.

The original version highlighted talented (and well-known) actresses: Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Darryl Hannah, Shirley MacLaine, and Olympia Dukakis.  The film was shot in Georiga. Its storyline was based around a group of friends, from the deep South, who’s lives crossed paths in a beauty parlor.  “Steel Magnolias” grossed over $95million in sales worldwide.

Now, Lifetime is bringing the classic film back. So far, the cast that has been announces will include Queen Latifah (as M’Lynn, the character Sally Field played in the original),  Jill Scott (as Dolly Parton’s role), Alfre Woodard (as Shirley MacLaine’s role), Condola Rashad, and Adepero Oduye.

“The caliber of talent associated with this film is astounding,” said Nancy Dubuc, President and General Manager of Lifetime Networks. “Queen Latifah, Phylicia, Alfre, Jill, Adepero, and Condola are some of the most celebrated women in music, film, television and stage — and we could not be more thrilled and honored for them to bring Robert Harling’s poignant story about the strength of women to a whole new generation.”

Kenny Leon will direct the film. Latifah is executive producing the film along with Smash’s Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, whom she worked with on the film “Chicago”.

Do you think this “all-black” remake will be well received?
