When I was 4 or 5, I knew I wanted to be in the entertainment industry. I think “singer” is written down in my baby book. My mother even says my first spoken words were from songs heard on the radio. Fast forward a few years, singing kinda fell to the waist-side, but my future career choice remained in the same industry. It went from singer to entertainment lawyer to being the first Black woman to own the largest record label in the world. LOL!  All of these things were so far fetched. Somehow, I knew my educational choices and personality would still put me inside the world of radio, television, film, and/or music.

For many people, finding the right career that’s suitable for you is daunting. You start out wanting one thing. By the time you graduate from college, your attitude, your environment, your livelihood, and such all changes. So many things could impact your dream. But if you focus hard enough on your passions, choosing the right career will be a breeze.  Here are six steps that may help you find out what jobs are best for you:

  • Understand & Know What Your Passions Are
  • Ask Friends & Family About Their Opinion of You & What Career Field They’d Choose For You
  • Research Careers That Match Your Interests & Experience
  • Pick Your Top 3 Choices
  • Create Several Versions of Your Resume (for those who may be talented in various areas; multi-talented)
  • Apply To Those Jobs That You Are Suitable For

The list above are just a few items you should answer (or consider) while figuring out what career(s) are best. It may take some time to sort through it all. But, I can guarantee you that if you have strong desires and passion, the universe will lead you to that direction. No one should have to work a job that they feel miserable doing. You only get one life. Therefore, use every opportunity to make the best of it…even if that means making an entire life switch in order to work your dream job.
