The second installment to the The Hobbit trilogy will soon hit theatres. But this time around, it will premiere at a cost.

Time Warner Inc’s Warner Bros apparently believe that movie goers will spend $40 on a ticket to see “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”.  The super-tickets, which will be sold in the U.S. and Canada, will provide a grander experience to individuals and/or families who chooses to see the film. For $40, you will receive “VIP” seating in plush chairs, an online copy for home or mobile viewing, and an free online copy of the first installment “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”.

Regal Entertainment Group and Cineplex Inc are the two major theater chains that will partner up with Warner Bros on the ticket inflation. The purpose of the ticket inflation is to see if this will increase revenue (since people are not going out to theaters as much nowadays).  Warner Bros will not reap all the benefit, however, Regal and Cineplex will both obtain a share of the monies earned. It is only befitting if they also earn a percentage considering that a lot of theaters are now equipped with larger screens, reserved seating, and better surround sound.

“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is expected to earn approximately $280 million total at the box office.
