Many people know who Judge Lynn Toler and other Black American judges are, but do they know who made it possible for these women to even be in their current professions? If not, then meet Jane Bolin, she was the first Black woman to serve as a judge in America. She was also the first Black woman to graduate from Williams College, practicing law in Poughkeepsie. After her undergraduate degree, she went to Yale Law School in 1931 where she made history again by being the first the woman the attend the school.

Jane Bolin became a judge for the city of New York on July 22, 1939. She paved the way for current and future Black female judges and we’re giving her thanks wishing her soul a happy birthday.

106 years ago from today she was born and almost 83 years ago she made history. May her achievements and knowledge continue to influence our future lawyers and judges.
