The death penalty has been a huge topic in congress, the church and society overall since the late 1800’s. Many American citizens feel that the death penalty is a very harsh punishment and agree that there are other ways of punishing people for criminal offenses. Recently, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin has been criticized for the cruel and inhumane botched execution of Clayton Lockett.

Lockett was a inmate in the Oklahoma prison system serving time for rape, robbery and among several of his crimes, kidnapping and killing a 19 year-old girl and burying her alive in a shallow grave. Lockett, 38, died of a heart attack 43 minutes after the lethal drugs was first administered. The prison report stated that the botch execution was attributed to a collapsed vein during the injection and that the needle was inserted in Lockett’s groin instead of his arm after having to be restrained. Governor Fallin stated that she doesn’t feel that blood she be on the hands of the state considering the crimes that Lockett committed.
