Nowadays, there has been an uprising of emcees that blur the line between hip hop and R&B. Drake has become the master of this distinction because he has been effective at both. Other artists (Ty Dolla $, Frank Ocean, James Fauntleroy) have made found their own rhythm-and-blues identity by accessing their own personal influences and making them musically profound. Yet, their music could easily be accessed by hip hop artists. Such line blurring has efficiently brought about a sound that can easily allow artists to musical “habitual line steppers”.

Pell is in the league of these line steppers of habit. His premier album, Floating While Dreaming, allows him to initiate his career while flexing his musical muscle.

Besides sounding similar to Chance The Rapper, Pell does have a focused sound that he works to capture on each track. “Dollar Tree” starts off with a message from his job about missed work and quickly evolves into a track that allows him to “spasm like ab contractions”. Through PJ Morton’s feature chorus crooning, Pell flips enough rhymes that allow him to rhythm ride. Yet, we have “Wait On Me” that allows him to converse over the track with a stop-and-go flow. Lyrically, there are no filler tracks on the album (which is quite promising).

The bigger beauty of this album is that the production easily matches the lyrics. “The Never” brings some old, funky guitar licks that make Pell’s flow sound effortlessly addictive. The bass heavy  “Kreation” starts off heavy and extremely slow until all of the elements come into play. Pell, with the assistance of Curtis Williams (Two-9), makes it all work. Much of the production wavers between hard hitting drums and spacey creations. With such a unified diversity, the sound of the album never loses its luster.

Pell has come with a notable example of music for his first album. The lyrics and flow are intact. The production is tight enough to garner some listens. Now, all he has to do is make himself more distinguishable from other rappers of his ilk. After that, he can easily win over more fans and critics alike.
