NY Giants Retiree, Brandon Jacobs, Explains How To Maintain NFL Checks [VIDEO]

Brandon Jacobs, former running back for the NY Giants, was recently spotted at a private BET Awards viewing party in Atlanta. STACKS Magazine had the opportunity to interview the 32-year old and find out what he’s been up to lately.

Jacobs says he has several business in New York (i.e. protein/workout, restaurant in the meat packing district, etc). But, he does travel back and forth from Atlanta, where he lives.  Outside of business, he enjoys spending time with his family.

One thing about Jacob is that he is careful on how he spends his money. This was event during our discussion as he discussed his businesses, why family will make you broke, and the reason he believes athletes are financially challenging the league on bodily injuries.

Any advice for the up-and-coming players on what to do with their money while they are in the league vs when they get out?

You know what…advice to the young guys this day and age doesn’t really work. Because, a lot of guys including myself playing ball don’t see why they go broke. It’s not what you buy. It’s not who you got with you. It’s your momma and your daddy, your aunt and uncle telling you “give me” all the time. That’s how you go broke. It’s the stuff you struggle saying no to.  This is my mother. This is my uncle, my brother. Why would I say no?  I went through that. I fought that for like 6 or 7 years. Well, actually I fought that for like 3 years until I realize I got my own kid, whom I got to save up for and make stuff happen.

So the number one way to go broke is through your own family.

How do you feel about players with head or neck injuries challenging the league?

I just think it’s a bunch of bull—, to begin with. These people challenging the league because they live super fast, spent all they bread, and when it was over – and before they knew it – they didn’t save nothing. They didn’t put nothing away. So know they are trying to go back and get it… a couple million from the league because they say they can’t think straight. They can’t sleep at night and have trouble when they wake up in the morning, so on and so forth.

Yeh, they are looking for a bailout. And I don’t believe in that. I’m a hard worker. Being from New Orleans, LA, I grew up fighting hard everyday. So, there’s no reason to stop.

If you had the opportunity to own or buy your own team, would you do that?

Absolutely not. It’s too much with it. You got to deal with stuff like people suing you because they got a headache (that came from football). It’s all sorts of stuff, man. It’s too much of a headache to deal with to be honest with you.

In January 2014, Jacobs retired from the league after 9 years. He has two Super Bowl rings.
