Chevy Woods: The Man With 3 Loves…Live Performance, Family, & The Indie Hustle [EXCLUSIVE]

It was a strange summer day in Atlanta. Well, it was actually a typical summer day: the weather was schizophrenic. At one point, it was sunny and humid. A few minutes removed from that moment I found a parking spot, it began to rain. Luckily, I found a way to be within the waiting area of the Aloft Hotel downtown. Still, I wondered if this interview situation would be as shifty as the weather.

Later on, I would learn that there would be trouble in paradise. It seemed as if finding a proper area to just interview Chevy was becoming a headache. Still, his management team were steadfast in resolving the issues so both parties (Chevy and the hotel) were happy with the results. After securing a conference room, things were finally on their way. It was time to understand the man that many only saw as “Wiz Khalifa’s homie”.

Honestly, he is much more than Wiz’s buddy. Additionally, he gave me one of the best interviews I could ever ask for.

The Elaboration of Chevy Woods

To start, I got to understand that Chevy is all about living his life and not concerning himself with the unnecessary foolishness. “We don’t have the time to talk to those acting like bitches and shit like that,” Chevy explained. Although his metaphor of “popping another bottle and taking another nigga’s bitch to the crib” isn’t literal, it is an understanding that he can’t waste time with small minded people. “Instead of having a discussion of ‘how much of a sucker you are’, I’m going to go over here and do this other positive thing,” Chevy noted.

Yet, he also realized the importance of the live performance. In fact, he had a nice tidbit of information to give to those that have the wrong idea:

“I think that there’s a misconception that if you rap on CD’s, or people hear you on CD’s, then everything is cool. But its a big difference between CD’s and a show, you know what I mean? By watching Wiz and the energy that he gives, and even being on tour with Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, the energy they bring from beginning to end is what attracts people to their shows.”

Beyond anything, he understands that it is the energy of the show that matters the most. In fact, it is the energy that helped him gain new fans. Thus, the live performance became that much more important.

The Evolution of Chevy Woods

What can be said is that Chevy Wood’s hip hop experiences has helped him evolve. For one, the biggest thing that drives him is the happiness that he can bring to his woman and daughter. Having them live the life he couldn’t live as a child means everything to him. He also realizes that the hip hop scene in Pittsburgh is “a melting pot; there just isn’t a lot of outlets”. He notes that “the scenery out there, as far as media outlets is low” and “people just do what they do for their homeboys at some point. And they tend to get stuck in that”. Seeing his has helped him realize he needed to go off the beaten path.

The Hustle According to Chevy Woods

Believe it not, Chevy Woods actually enjoys the independent hustle of making music. “I don’t think you can tour as much being on a label,” he noted with such ease and candor. Chevy does understand that Wiz does what he wants because he has leverage. Still, he understands that he needs to make sure to tune up his show how he wants without the worry about deadlines and dates hanging over his head. Outside of that, he is going the “cliche thing” of dealing with shoe companies and clothing lines with his own ideas. Thus, Chevy Woods is working to make the most of his situation on his own terms.

Chevy Woods may not be a household name for many. However, he plans on doing things for the betterment of his situation. He understands what it takes to be successful and applies it. Also, Chevy realizes that his hard work has assisted him in reaping life changing benefits. He can remain an unknown for however long it shall be. Still, Chevy Woods is still going to win whether he receives accolades or not.
