Not every job we land continues to look as good as it did when we first started. Once the honeymoon-phase ends and the reality of competing with favoritism, being overworked, and underpaid veers its ugly head, it may be time to move on. Here’s how you can make that painless transition to quit your job and venture on to reach your potential.

  • Save the date: That’s right. Don’t just drop the bomb on everybody the day of, plan ahead of time for their sake and especially yours. Develop a strategic exit strategy by having a date in mind for your last day and make sure your backup plan is already in place.
  • Fight the power: Even if the job sucks or you feel like you’re wasting your time, always, always, always remember that in the world of business relationships trump all, including the one you have with your boss. Make sure your relationships all end on a positive note. You never know who you’ll have to cross again one day.
  • Over and out: Once you have determined when you’ll quit, slowly start clearing out your locker or desk periodically, but do so quietly—not a word to your colleagues until your boss knows. In the mean time, familiarize yourself with the company’s exist policy (if they have one) and schedule a time with your boss where the two of you can meet one on one.

Quitting your job can be a painless process if done haphazardly. Protect your reputation as an employer and leave with a touch of class with these tips.
