Just when passengers were happy to receive a free round-trip ticket after reaching 25,000 miles…

Delta Airlines recently announced a list of spending limits to their SkyMiles mileage program. Earlier this year, Delta revised the program to include a revenue component which affected all elite status categories. For instance, their Silver status requirements in the past only required passengers to earn 25,000 miles. However, in 2015, to qualify for Silver status passengers will have to fly 25,000 miles or more AND spend $2,500 in plane tickets. For 2016, Delta has increased the spending requirement to $3,000.

  • Silver from $2,500 in 2015 to $3,000 in 2016
  • Gold from $5,000 in 2015 to $6,000 2016
  • Platinum from $7,500 in 2015 to $9,000 in 2016
  • Diamond from $12,500 in 2015 to $15,000 in 2016

In addition, Delta has eliminated a few upgrade options on discounted economy tickets. This change was needed in order to compete with other low-cost airfares offered by airlines like Spirit and Frontier.
