NE Patriots, Lebron James, Football Take No. 1 Spot Among Social Media Users

Football season is in full effect. With the popularity of social media, NFL fans can express their views on plays and scores in real-time. The game experience has taken on a whole new meaning. Thus, social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram give fans a certain level of power. NFL teams, as well as advertising companies, can use statistical tools to figure “what’s cool” among the fans.

One of these analytics platforms is StatSocial. Recently, StatSocial compiled new data on NFL-related social fans (as shown on the infographic below) to find out what’s most popular.  Here are some highlights from the charted data:

  • New England Patriots is No. 1 on the list of NFL teams with the most fans on social media (across ALL social media networks); #2 – Dallas Cowboys (5.3 million fans), #3 – Seattle Seahawks (4.9 million fans), #4 – San Francisco 49Ers (4.7 million fans), #5 – Denver Broncos (4.5 million fans) and Green Bay Packers (4.5 million fans)
  • On Twitter, Whites make up 70% of all NFL fans, while Blacks only make up 12%
  • On Twitter, over 60% of NFL fans are ages 25 to 44 years old
  • Football is the No. 1 favorite sport discussed on social networks; people prefer country music and humor/comedy more than basketball.
  • Lebron James is the No. 1 favorite sports figure among social fans.

The infographic shows data collected in 2014. Also, the data reflects demographics and lifestyles of social media users who actively converse/engage with each sports team. Over 50 million social media users across 60 different social sites were studied.
