The “Don’t Steal Possible” campaign took over New York City’s Foley Square last Friday (Oct. 3). Over 21,000 teachers, parents and kids came together to raise awareness of New York’s education crisis.  Everyone in attendance called for action upon the public school system to expand access to better schools.

City officials in attendance were New York State Senator Jeff Klein, Senate Co-Majority Leader, Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez (68th District) and Assemblyman Marcos Crespo. The founding co-director at Excellence Girls Charter School, Sam Tweedy, acted as official emcee, while the Bronx 2 Dancers provided the entertainment.  Hip-hop culturalist and DJ, Questlove, rocked the crowd and expressed why he joined the fight for a better education.

“This morning I took a stand for kids education. Every child deserves a good school and a great education.” – Questlove

Eva Moskowitz, Founder and CEO of Success Academy Charter Schools recently expressed the importance of the #DontStealPossible campaign to the Wall Street Journal. In her sit down with WSJ’s James Freeman, Moskowitz revealed the following:

  • Over 300 schools in the school system
  • 90% of kids can’t read or do math
  • In some areas, NYC’s public education system has failed up to four generations in many families

It is statistics like these that has parents worried about their child’s future. The #DontStealPossible campaign’s goal is for city and state leaders to devise a plan that will elevate the curriculum in schools. Parents believe that a new strategy could potentially prevent children from failing in NYC schools.

To support their efforts, notable muralist Greg Lamarche (and kids at the rally) debuted a brand new 8 ft. tall x 160 ft. tall mural. Five additional murals will be created by Lamarche  in each of the five New York City boroughs.
