Top 4 Retailers with Best Return Policies

Christmas is over and it’s time to get rid of that ugly holiday sweater.

Traditionally, December 26 is known for great shopping deals or tons of givebacks. This is the day people make store returns, exchanges, or request a refund for any unwanted gifts. In 2013, the National Retail Federation reports that Americans returned approximately $270 million in merchandise, which amounted to an average of 4 gifts per person.

Shoppers are finding out that return policies differ from store to store though. The process of returning a gift can be very easy…or frustrating. According to GOBankingRates.com, smart shoppers identify which retailers have good return policies prior to buying gifts. Out of the U.S. biggest retailers, GBR created a list of stores with the best return policies. Here are four retailers that topped the list:

  • Nordstrom return policy: This high-end department store comes closest to having zero restrictions on its return policy, and no time limit to bring in a gift for refund.
  • Macy’s return policy: This store doesn’t enforce a set time period for returns and allows online purchases to be returned in store as well.
  • REI return policy: Recipients have up to a year to return unwanted gifts and benefit from an added 100 percent guarantee; with a proof of purchase, customers can return unsatisfactory items even after the tags have been removed and they’ve been used.
  • Costco return policy: Most items have no return time limit and customers can obtain a full cash or check refund with just the membership number used to buy the gift.
