On Sunday, SportsCenter anchor, Stuart Scott, lost his battle with cancer at the age of 49. The ESPN anchor and reporter became a staple in the sports world due to his unique commentary and catchphrases. His popularity grew over a 20-year span ending with huge respect from his colleagues and athletes.

Scott’s first diagnosis of cancer was during an emergency appendectomy visit in 2007. The cancer reappeared in 2011 when Scott tweeted that he was undergoing chemotherapy. His final recurrence of the disease happened in December 2012. Scott told USA Today, in 2013, that he maintained a healthy workout routine of mixed martial arts, which he would train for after his weekly chemotherapy treatments.

At the 2014 ESPY Awards, Scott received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. During his acceptance speech, he gave a heartfelt summation of how he dealt with his illness.

“When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer,” Scott told the audience. “You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.”

Scott leaves behind two daughters, Taelor, 19,and Sydni, 15.
