Valentine’s Day is this weekend. For some of us, budgeting has become a way of life and finding ways to celebrate special occasions on minimal dollars is a task. Luckily, there are creative things couples can do that keeps the fire blazing in their relationship. If you happen to be in this financially tight situation, activities like a romantic walk in the park or candlelight bubble bath may do the trick. But for couples who like to think outside the box, here are a couple of ideas that may create your best Valentine’s Day yet.

Write a love note or poem – One of the best ways to express your feelings for your significant other is to write. Thoughts on paper, whether in letter form or as a poem, is believed to be more sentimental. So, take time to write down how you truly feel and on V-Day recite your words to one another. Heck, if you’re married, pull those old vows out. Create the perfect mood by dimming the lights and turning on some soft music. The right ambiance always enhances the moment.

Prepare a “guess what’s for dinner” meal – This may sound strange but it can be lots of fun. Skip going to the grocery store (remember we’re not spending any money, we’re budgeting) and choose random food items that are already in your kitchen. The creativity and team work comes into play when you and your boo are forced to think of a meal to prepare. You never know what’s stored away in your frig or pantry. Plus, this will also build a stronger bond between the two of you knowing that if times truly got rough, you both would know what to do to survive.

Ride out – To do this, you will first need to see how much gas you have in the car. If it is enough to take a hour long ride, hop in the car and just ride around your city. There are parts of your city you may have never visited. Creep through the well-manicured, well-lit mansions on the ritzier side of town. Wherever you decide to go, the time spent in the car will give you an opportunity to just talk about life. No music playing or no distractions…just conversation.

Attend a FREE event or activity in your city – Most cities have a newspaper or online website that lists free or discounted events during special holidays like V-Day. Check your local listings to see what’s happening around your city that day. The local museum may offer a free entry to an exhibit. The jazz cafe down the street may have a live band you can check out for free. You never know what type of no-fee activity you may come across. You just have to do a little research.

Host a couple’s night out – What better way to save money than a B.Y.O.S. (Bring Your Own Stuff) party. Everyone can pitch in and bring what your household may be lacking (i.e. beverages, meat, dessert, etc). Use this time to play board games or drinking games. Have a blast with like-minded couples (that’s if you don’t mind being around other people on V-Day). Have candid discussions about relationships. Afterwards, of course, kick everybody out and get the real romance popping as a night cap.

Volunteer at a shelter – Blessings flow when you extend a hand to others less fortunate. Instead of making V-Day all about yourselves, why not volunteer some time at a local shelter or even a senior citizens home. Build a greater understanding of one another by helping someone else. You never know the impact your union will have on the community.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about spending large sums of money. Material things do not possess the same sincerity as a gift (or experience) given from the heart. Be creative this holiday and frugal. Your pockets and relationship will thank us later for it. 🙂
