A press release went out last week on behalf of Kean University rescinding their offer for Common to be the commencement speaker at the school.

Egos and tempers went wild after Police informed the school that they were not happy with the rappers lyrics to his 2000 song entitled “A Song for Assata.” The song was about Joanne Chesimard who goes by the name of Assata Shakur killed a police officer in 1977, escaped prison and fled to Cuba where she currently resides. The President of the State Troopers in New Jersey, Chris Burgos, said having Common speak would be a “slap in the face.”

Common recently won the Academy Award for composing the song “Glory” for the 2014 film “Selma.”
