For The Love of Money: How Far Is Too Far?

First, let me say…YES I am using Mimi Faust’s sex tape scandal as the basis for this opinionated article. There’s no need to put up a picture and leave a disclaimer as if the write up isn’t about her and Nikko’s situation. It is! But it is also about every other celebrity or person who goes way beyond the limits.

I feel like this is a good opportunity for people to try and understand what are the “limits.” At what point or time should a person not sell their soul for money? Is having money that big of a deal that a person will do ANYTHING to get it? Why do we fight, kill, manipulate, steal, and even swing on shower rods to get money? These are questions I struggle to understand.

On yesterday (Monday), Us Weekly posted an exclusive video interview with “Love & Hip Hop ATL” star Mimi Faust. In the interview, Mimi revealed that she indeed lied about the sex tape. She revealed that she agreed with Nikko to tape the sessions and sell the footage to Vivid Entertainment. It was also perfect timing that the interview went public. On season 4 episode 9, Mimi was to finally come clean about the scandal.

According to Us Weekly, Mimi regretted the decision made to go along with the plan. What she thought would be a one time romp around, ended up being several video taped sessions. In order to make a complete DVD, Vivid Entertainment required the couple to record more videos. Before the video was released to the public, numbers were thrown around as to how much Mimi and Nikko would earn off of the tape. TMZ reported that the sex tape sold $400,000 in pre-sales. Mimi also told Us Weekly that the payout was good and that she will receive quarterly checks for the remainder of her life.

So, she’s financially set for life. But, was this the right move for Mimi Faust? What other “money making” routes could she have taken?

Money does not make one happy. There are millionaires, billionaires who are completely miserable and disgusted with their lives. Yes, money does make your circumstances less worrisome. Unfortunately, money does not clear your conscious. Along with the money, Mimi will have to live with this decision for the rest of her life. There’s no telling how this may backfire on her when it comes to future opportunities. The sex tape worked for Kim Kardashian. But, I don’t believe a Black woman will have the same luck.

How far is too far?
