On Sunday evening (Sept. 13), the National Action Network, TV One, and the Reverend Al Sharpton held their sixth annual Triumph Awards. The awards ceremony honors individuals in entertainment, business, and philanthropy for their outstanding contributions made for the benefit of our communities.

The ceremony was filmed in Atlanta at 200 Peachtree and will air on TV One on Saturday, October 3rd at 8:00pm EST.

Actress Tichina Arnold served as host for the evening. Other notables in attendance were Afemo Omilami, Danielle Nicolet, Darrin Henson, Donnie Simpson, Nicole Beharie, Soledad O’Brien, Syleena Johnson, Richard Lawson,  Patrik-Ian Polk and Terri J. Vaughn, who all served as presenters. Musical performances were given by Tyrese, Tasha Cobbs, Jazmine Sullivan, Ledisi, Estelle, Chante Moore, Stokley Williams, and the Youth Ensemble of Atlanta.

Rapper T.I. also delivered a thought-provoking speech encouraging the youth to take pride and stay focus on carrying on the Black Lives Matter movement. The speech was titled “United We Stand.”

Honorees for the evening included:  Tyrese Gibson (Entertainer of the Year; honored by Martin Luther King III and received a special message from friend and fellow entertainer Ludacris),  Rev. Dr. Joseph Echols Lowery (Chairman’s Award for Historic & Transformative Service), Wanda Sykes (Activism in the Arts), Chief Diversity Officer and Global Director of Education and External Relations for Intel, Rosalind Hudnell (Corporate Executive of the Year), and John Legend (President’s Award for Service and Humanitarian Efforts).

The house band for the night was The Robert Glasper Experiment.
