Boxer Manny Pacquiao has been officially fired by Nike. Pacquiao’s anti-gay comment “worse than animals” proved to be too much for the athletic apparel corporation. In a statement issued by Nike, the company stated “we find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent.”  Although Pacquiao and Nike have maintained a business relationship since 2006, his recent comments were too harsh to overlook. “Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community,” the company stated.

News reports reveal that Pacquiao tried to persuade Nike to give him his job back. Unfortunately, Nike wasn’t budging on their decision.

So, what is next for Pacquiao?

The Nike Air Trainer 1.3 Max Manny Pacquiao was set to launch late spring, which was going to retail for $170. Like the sneakers, Pacquiao is the face of loads of other merchandise. Some wonder with his firing, will Pacquiao try to secure a deal with another brand. The Jordan Brand – the one that has the “Jumpman” logo, not the Swoosh – is one that Pacquiao has considered moving to. This move wouldn’t be the worst, but it wouldn’t be the best decision either.

Pacquiao has money problems. The Bureau of Internal Revenue in the Phillippines is still after him regarding his 2010 tax liability. Money, as of now, is a priority for Pacquiao. There’s a reason why he reportedly begged and pleaded with Nike to keep his sponsorship. Pacquiao need those coins.

Pacquiao’s a big brand in the sporting world. His level of fame can easily be compared to top athletes like Michael Jordan, Lebron James, and others. It will be interesting to see what company works with him next.
