Microsoft hasn’t confirmed it, but IT insiders believe the new augmented reality headset will debut in March 2016.

The headset and its development components costs $3,000. Pre-orders went live today, Feb. 29.  The HoloLens is unique in that it is “self-contained.” Its untethered reality experience is different in that users don’t have to plug into a PC or mobile phone. Others being offered by Samsung, HTC, and Sony PlayStation, for instance, are complete opposite in that nature.

HoloLens comes with a headset, carrying case, charger and cable, a clicker, nose pads, and straps. HoloLens is powered by a custom-built Microsoft Holographic Processing Unit (HPU) that features Intel 32-bit architecture. It’s high-powered to understand gestures and eyesight, so that the unit can map out your surroundings in real time.

The $3,000 price point may seem a bit high. This is because the initial roll-out is for developers, based on what enthusiasts say. HoloLens will more than likely go down in price when the Consumer Edition is released.
