Rapper and business mogul Jay Z and his mother, Gloria Carter, is giving back to our youth where it is most desperately needed…in education!

The Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship is offering financial assistance to high school students and undergraduates entering college for the first time. The scholarship, which was established in 2003, offers an unique opportunity to students who aren’t able to afford the high cost of college. Since the start of the scholarship, it is being reported that the foundation has dished out $3.6 million in support of initiatives that empower the youth and our communities. These initiatives have included college tours, international studies, counseling and community-based programs.

Here are some additional details via Atlanta Black Star:

The scholarship is open to those who have been incarcerated or who have faced particular life challenges but still want to pursue a higher education. It is a program that gives students a unique chance to pursue higher education despite their backgrounds.

Students who have either graduated from high school or earned their G.E.D. are asked to apply. The minimum grade point average is 2.0. Targeted students must have a strong desire to attend college and earn their degree. Also, students must have a desire to give back to their communities.

Students up to age 25 may apply. The scholarship can be used for tuition, room and board, books, fees and other college-related expenses. All high school seniors, undergraduate students at two-year or four-year institutions and vocational or trade school students are eligible to apply.

The deadline for this scholarship is April 30, and the award amount ranges from $1,500 – $2,500.
