There’s a new law in California that allows patients the right to legally end their life.

Under the “End of Life Option Act,” terminally ill patients can obtain aid to die. Eligibility requirements includes mental competency, having less than six months to live, and is able to digest prescriptions drugs. Patients with euthanasia requires direct lethal injection to be administered by another person.

California law requires patients must be informed that prescription drugs are available. To stray away from feeling obligated to end their life right away, patients aren’t forced to take the drugs.

Advocates of the law believe patients should have the right to decide if they want “aid in dying.” Others believe that patients may feel pressured to end their lives under this law.

The “End of Life Option Act” went into affect today (Thursday).
