Michael Jordan is on a roll. After donating $1 million to the Institute for Community-Police Relations and another $1 million to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Jordan has cut a much larger check for African-American history.

On Monday (August 8), it was announced that Jordan has donated $5 million to the National Musuem of African American History and Culture at the Smithsonian museum on the National Mall.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to support this museum,” Jordan said in a statement. “I also am indebted to the historic contributions of community leaders and athletes such as Jesse Owens, whose talent, commitment and perseverance broke racial barriers and laid the groundwork for the successful careers of so many African Americans in athletics and beyond.”

Museum Director Lonnie Bunch said the museum will use the donation to continue its exploration of black athletes and how their participation changed sports and the American society. In addition, Jordan will have a section of the museum named after him, which will include Jordan’s 1996 NBA Finals jersey.

The museum is set to open Sept. 24.
