The 23rd annual 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards were held Sunday, January 29, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Many of Hollywood’s elite were there to be recognized for their outstanding film and acting work. The moment of celebration was also a moment of reflection about America’s current political climate. Winners of the night, Mahershala Ali, Taraji P. Henson, and others expressed their discord regarding President Donald Trump’s halting of immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim nations.

Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor for his performance in “Moonlight.” In his speech, he spoke of overcoming a strained relationship with his mother, who’s a Protestant minister, after confessing to her that he’d converted to Islam.

“We see what happens when you persecute people, Ali said. “They fold into themselves.”

“We put things to the side,” Ali said of their differences. “I’m able to see her. She’s able to see me. We love each other. The love has grown. That stuff is minutia. It’s not that important.”

“Hidden Fences” star Taraji P. Henson also spoke of unification once up on stage to accept the film’s award for best movie ensemble, alongside co-stars Janelle Monae and Octavia Spencer.

“This story is about unity,” Henson said. “This story is about what happens when we put our differences aside and we come together as a human race. We win. Love wins. Every time.”

It’s apparent that Trump’s first few days in office and policy changes continues to anger many in Hollywood. The Golden Globes was first, now the SAG Awards. Trust, we can expect to hear more at this year’s Oscars.
