Mary J. Blige is not here for the BS!

The Queen of Hip Hop/R&B recently stopped by Power 105.1’s Angie Martinez radio show to discuss the details of her pending divorce and forthcoming album, Strength of a Woman.

The pending divorce between Mary J. Blige and Kendu Issacs has been front page news for the past few months. Issacs has demanded a $100,000 a month in spousal support and other miscellaneous items to be cared for by Mary. This, however, is absurd in Mary’s eyes and these demands are what has held up the divorce in court. Their 13 year marriage is at an end and the pain of ending their union has forced Mary to take control of her life and music. She admits that she “fucked up” by giving her husband “everything.”

“Unfortunately, he was my everything and you can’t make a person your everything. Because you’re giving them too much power. You’re giving them God’s power. And, this is why things like this happen. So, I just gave him way too much. I gave so much so that he could feel comfortable in the company of my peers, you know. When he comes around, he’s not just my “Mary J. Blige’s husband””

The songstress tells Angie Martinez that her new music reflects her current mood and hope that fans can relate. On Strength of a Woman, fans can expect to see features from Missy Elliott, Quavo (Migos), DJ Khaled, and even Kanye West. The “Love Yourself” single with Kanye was a long time coming. She tells Angie that the collaboration came about after a several back and forth texts with Kanye.

“Love Yourself” is hardcore hip-hop soul. Kanye’s on it.

“I’m a fan of Kanye. I’ve always loved Kanye. I always wanted to work with Kanye. So, I reached out to his manager and got a number on him. So, I began to text him back and forth about how much I really really wanted him. And, I knew him. We speak whenever we see each other, but it’s never like “hey Kanye would you do a record with me?” But, I knew I needed him on “Love Yourself.” So, texting him back and forth to the point where he was like “won’t you come over and we sit and talk and see what you want.” And, the rest is history.”

Mary and Angie also take a walk down memory lane. Angie speaks about a time when Mary loaned her $2K or $3K to help pay her rent. The two also share stories of Puff Daddy at their birthday party and Mary’s infamous dance moves.
