Kevin_Enjoying_Coke_Zero

Kevin Hart is pumping up marketing efforts for his new film Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain by incorporating a message for guys too. In a new partnership with Coca Cola’s Coke Zero™ imprint, the comedian/actor will go on a nationwide promotional tour champing the idea that as a man “It’s Not Your Fault…Enjoy Everything.”

“‘Let Me Explain’ builds on the current Coke Zero marketing platform, called ‘It’s Not Your Fault…Enjoy Everything,” said Lauventria Robinson, Vice President, Multicultural Marketing, Coca-Cola North America Group. “We have teamed up with Kevin to take a lighthearted and satirical perspective on the stereotypical things that men do, while cheering guy moments of bonding and camaraderie. Coke Zero has given men the excuse that it’s okay to be who you are; ‘it’s not your fault.’ Kevin has their back with the opening line, ‘let me explain.’ It’s a perfect partnership for a brand that celebrates men.”

“I’m excited about releasing Let Me Explain and working with Coca-Cola Zero to bring it to the masses,” said Hart. “The movie and Coke Zero share a similar view on not making excuses for a man being a man. We have reasons why we do what we do and most start with, we’re men. So it’s okay to play video games all night, talk junk with your boys or pretend you’ve worked out harder than you have – that’s what men do. Coke Zero says that’s cool and so do I.”

The tour will stop at selected cities across the U.S. and allow consumers to enjoy a private screening of the film.  As consumers attend the screening at local Regal Cinema theaters, they will get the opportunity to walk the black carpet and may also receive a special guest appearance of Kevin Hart himself.

Chicago – 6/12

New York City – 6/19

Atlanta – 6/21

Los Angeles – 6/27

Additional promo efforts will include a TV spot called “Theater Seats” which will air on BET and TBS and posted online. Hart’s company HartBeat Productions will produce the TV spot and three digital vignettes that will be released on social media outlets this fall.

Event Recap: Young Jeezy Celebrates Partnership w/Gourmet Footwear @ Wish ATL [Exclusive Photos]

On Thursday, June 13th, platinum recording artist Young Jeezy celebrated his new partnership with Gourmet Footwear. The event was held at Wish Atlanta Boutique (located in the Little 5 Points area).  Various media outlets, celebrities, and tastemakers were in attendance to get a first-hand look at shoes.  The founder of Gourmet Footwear, Greg Lucci, was in the building to speak more about the partnership with the Snowman. In an initial press release, Lucci stated that Young Jeezy was the ideal candidate for the collaboration because of his ability to have “navigated himself to an aspirational lifestyle from humble beginnings.”

Gourmet Footwear is a LA-based company that separates itself from other brands by offering high-end luxury shoes for the regular guy.  The brand specializes in Italian leather and other unique styles that give the average casual shoe more refined look. Several of the shoes were on display during the event. From black suede and animal print to red alligator full-grain leather, the styles and colors of the shoes were somewhat eclectic in taste and would best be adorned by the fashionably-driven who aren’t afraid to stand out.  Because of the high-end fabrics that they use, you would think the shoes are pretty expensive. Surprisingly, the shoes are not.  Most of the shoes, after checking their website at www.gourmetfootwear.com, cost around $100.00.

To see first hand what the shoes look like, here are a few photos from the event:

Steve Harvey Shares Some Valuable Lessons on Achieving Success; Talk Show Renewed Through 2016

steve harvey show

Yesterday  on “The Steve Harvey Show”, Harvey talked briefly about his rise to the top and how he achieved success.  What was interesting was that, he told the audience that there are several principles he uses to guide his life. Having certain principles or guidelines to help you stay focused and determined benefits those who wish to make something of themselves. We’ve all had a chance to see with our own eyes how Harvey rose from a broke standup comedian to a multi-millionaire with his own radio show, television show, best-selling author, movie producer, etc.  These principles truly helped guide Steve’s life in a positive and financially rewarding way.

In case you need a little inspiration and words of advice from Harvey, here are the “Principles for Success” shared on the show:

  • Like attracts like… if you see it in your mind, you can hold it in your had.
  • Ask, Believe, Receive…when you are trying to figure it out all the way to the end, you will hinder your success. Faith says believe and you will receive.
  • Gratitude is a powerful process… it gets you to where you want to be quicker.
  • Laughter attracts joy… learn to laugh more; it releases negativity and attracts joy.

As he continue to make a mark on the entertainment industry, Harvey is making one big stride in the television talk show circuit.  Considered the 2nd most popular talk show in 2012/2013, “The Steve Harvey Show” sits just behind Kate Couric’s show and is averaging 1.93 million viewers an episode.  These are great ratings for a new talk that critics thought wouldn’t last.  So, apparently, the network has faith in Harvey and want to see him continue to succeed. Thus, his talk show has renewed its contract to year 2016.

So we won’t stop seeing Steve Harvey’s big Kool-Aid smile anything soon. Way to go Steve!

The Under 30 CEO: Sky’s The Limit’s Jakeem Smith Shows Veterans A Refreshed Way of PR & Branding

Jakeem Smith

The business of public relations requires an individual who is “in-the-know”. A person who is social and has an a flair for diffusing crisis situations. Whether that person communicates via phone, email, or face-to-face, he or she has to be brazen with their approach and secure with the decisions they make. You see, the job of a publicist comes with a heavy load. Why? Because it is not only their lives they have to deal with. It is also the lives, reputations, and public images of their clients they have to be protective of.  If you are familiar with the entertainment industry, oftentimes you’ll see people in their 30s and up taking on the role of publicist.  Rarely, do you see a young person being responsible for such a huge task as this. But as the industry continues to expand, there seems to be an outpour of young adults grabbing hold of their futures and making things happen.

Jakeem Smith, of Sky’s The Limit Entertainment LLC, is one individual who knew early on he wasn’t settling for nothing less than success.  Born in Dover, Delaware, his upbringing was the catalyst behind his need to make a difference in the world.  Starting off as a photographer, Jakeem has had the pleasure of shooting Dondria (So So Def), Ne Ne Leakes, Terrance Howard, Jermaine Dupree, and other known celebrities. From there, his career has truly grown and has experienced a diverse range of interests. Thanks to Chanita Foster (reality star, “Football Wives” and founder of Beyond The Game non-profit organization) and Nicci Gilbert (singer/business woman/creator and executive producer of “R&B Divas”) Jakeem’s life is soaring great heights.  Having the unique ability to maintain his clients public presence, he’s made a name for himself at just 24 years old.  It’s apparent that he has a long and very rewarding career ahead of him. But, what makes him a threat amongst his peers?  Well, it’s his ideals about integrity, helping clients reach the next level, lessons learned, and maintaining a great deal of positivity that makes him stand out in the PR world.

Intrigued by his ability to establish himself as a respected publicist, and now total brand builder, STACKS Magazine had the pleasure to interview Jakeem.  It was surprising to hear his take on the PR business, working with celebrities, and how he runs his company.  After reading our interview, you’ll realize too that this kid is about to be a force to reckon with.

Bels: How did you get your start in the PR business?

Jakeem: I started off as a photographer. I shot for Sister 2 Sister Magazine and a few other magazines. From there working with the celebrities, that’s kind of how I met Nicci (Gilbert) from doing different events and stuff. I pretty much seen a lot of my friends who had hired different people that did PR. Basically, they were taking their money. They weren’t doing anything for their product. I felt bad. So I decided, because I have a lot of resources and I am very opinionated. I’m very boisterous. If I believe in something or want to do something in particular I’m all for it. Through that, I decided to help some of my friends. I decided…why not do public relations? So, I started doing PR working with different actors, models, corporations, events and stuff like that. And it got bigger and bigger.

I started working with Chanita Foster’s foundation (Beyond The Game) which is a non-profit. So, I was doing PR and marketing and stuff like that for the non-profit. Through that, that helped me see a bigger light to what was going on and interacting more hands-on. She didn’t have to really talk to people. So that helped me with my communication skills a little bit more. Staying in contact with people, I had to figure out different ways to get things. I remember one time Chanita called me and said she needed 30 caps and gowns. I’m about to go to Africa and she called me like 7AM in the morning. She said my flight leaves at 5PM and so I had to find different things. Through challenges and people encouraging me to do this, I just seem to press forward with it.

With working with Nicci, being her executive assistant, it helped me too. Be able to know who I was as a person because a lot of times PR’s don’t know who they are. A lot of people can talk that good game, “oh I can get you this. I can get you that. I can get you booked on the Wendy Williams show.” But it’s all a bluff. So Nicci taught me under her leadership how to be a boss and how to don’t take NO for an answer. I’m not going to walk somewhere or go in front of anybody and they aren’t not going to tell me NO. They’re going to tell me YES. So, I became a boss.

That’s how I look at things now. In the beginning, I was kind of timid. I really like let people mold me into the direction I was supposed to go to. But now, it’s like “this is what I’m going to do, this is how it’s going to go”. And that’s it. I don’t know if you follow my Twitter or not. But, I do check people and I get them in order. Because a lot of times people think they can walk over on you because of the “ladder”. You know, what part of the ladder you are on. A lot times you have to make an example of certain people. Let them know that you are not afraid and that you are somebody. I believe that everybody has a purpose. Everyone has something to bring to the table. But a lot of times some people act like a b—h. Sometimes people got to be called out on it. I’m one of those publicist that I don’t mind going on Twitter and saying how I feel. And encouraging other people to say, “hey don’t allow someone to push over on you.” Recently, I spoke at Stone Mountain High School. I was talking about the different ways of how people need to know their value and know their product. A lot of times we don’t know the direction we are going in to. So, that’s kind of been my whole message to people. A lot of people don’t know their product. Like you are a product yourself because you are working through what you want to get out to the masses. You have your magazine for a purpose. You know you’re a product.

Being on the show (“R&B Divas”) has really helped my fan base a lot. I got more respect because they figure I’m a hard worker and a go-getter. But you’ll see the transition this season of how I evolved.

Bels: As a PR person, what are some of the things a potential clients should go in requesting from that publicist?

Jakeem: What I always tell people and I what I tell my clients, before you come to me right a list of exactly what they want. What are you expectations of me? What are you trying to deliver to the masses? And at the end of the day, where are you trying to go within the next few months?” A lot of times we don’t go into business knowing exactly what we want. So basically we get jived over because no one gave us the right direction to what we are supposed to do. If we don’t know what our expectations are or what we should be doing, no one will take us seriously at all. It’s unfortunate that it happens the way that it does, but it happens. That’s the way of life. We as people need to start asking questions and stop allowing people to take our money or take advantage of us. If we don’t know, it will not be really good for us. It’s sad because I see a lot of times people allow other people to take control of them. The benefit of that happening is that they don’t know what’s going on.

It’s unfortunate. This is why I always give people a homework assignment. Before you even come to me, these are the questions I’m going to ask you. Because at the end of the day, how can I best deliver or serve you if you don’t even know what you want. So you’re wasting my time, you’re wasting your time…and that’s how a lot of PRs get over on people. No one knows the direction they want to go in. So, the PRs are like, “Hell, I don’t have to do anything for them. They don’t know what the hell they want to do.” Of course the PRs are supposed to help them and mold them into the right direction. But, these new PRs they don’t really care. It’s all about the money. They’re like hey let me get what I can get out of this and keep it moving.

Bels: Yes I agree with you. The PR has to have some accountability as to being able to give some advice. As a client, we are coming to you for that. This is for the people that probably know, to a certain extent, what they want out of the partnership. But sometimes they don’t necessarily know what a PR person can do, what are they supposed to provide for you. So they do come to you needing some type of information or feedback to help them map out what it is they want to accomplish.

As far as PR fees, what are the average costs for hiring a PR person?

Jakeem: It depends. You may have PRs that may charge you $200 a month. It depends on the client and where you are. If a PR believes in that person, they may say I’m going to break down my prices just for you so that I can help you go to the next level. They see something special and they want to proceed and help them. I have some clients that pay me a $1000 to $15,000 a month or some clients that may pay me $700. So it all depends on where the client is. Some clients are more established than others. You don’t have a set price because everybody can’t afford to pay that same amount.

I’m the type of person that tries to work with people. Find the best way to help them and get them in the right direction. But the thing is, it has to be in the same direction as my brand. If their brand and my brand don’t match, it’s not going to work.

Bels: What is your brand?

Jakeem: My brand is a brand that if you here my name, or you go somewhere, they know who I am. They now that I am no nonsense and I don’t tolerate tomfoolery. And because I am connected with Nicci, a lot of people know that anybody I bring to the table, they got to be on point too. I’m a reflection of her as well. Just as much as I have my own brand, I’m a reflection of hers too. Because she has allowed me to do what I’m doing now, I have a lot of respect for her. So, I make sure whoever I bring to the table or in my circle, make sense and not going to damage the brand.

Bels: What does your company specialize in?

Jakeem: Specifically, we specialize in event planning. We love doing events. From that, of course PR and we do a lot of stuff for corporations as well. We are a company that trying to help people go to the next level. We challenge people to see the bigger picture. We do artist development. We do branding. We do event planning. We do one-on-one sessions as well with a lot of different people. It all depends on what’s going on at that particular time. We are not one of those PR firms that only strictly do PR, market you on social media, get you online, and/or a PR firm that just do event planning. We do a little bit of everything. We are very personal in what we do. We try to reach the masses and help people where they are. And get them to the place they’ve been wanting to go to. So that’s what we do.

We actually are a label. My company is Skys The Limit Entertainment, LLC. So we actually have a label. We have two artists that are signed to our label. We have other artists that are under our PR firm. But we only have two that are officially under our label. We do a lot of stuff under my company. We are pretty versatile in what we do. We are really hard workers. We are on it. I have business partners. So we work well together. We make sure we help one another in the direction we want to go to.

Bels: For upcoming artists that are making their way into the music business, what are some of the key things they need to do in order to brand themselves effectively?

Jakeem: The number one thing is to LISTEN. We as people we don’t listen to the people that are trying to help us. The people that I work with they are like, “I don’t like this. This is the way it supposed to be done. This is what I want. This is the direction I want to go to.” Sometimes you have to take the direction of the people who are trying to help you. And then, once you get a name and people know your brand, then you can start working on the different things that you’d like to do. Sometimes you got to break down a little bit and do what people are used to first. Then you can go in and working your way in and doing different things that people will say “Wow, that’s different. That’s someone that I’d want to see X, Y, and Z with.”

Our company is very different. We believe in the best for our clients. We would never tell them to do something that we wouldn’t do. Like, even though we have different workers who do our marketing or promo or whatever that works under our company, we actually still do it too ourselves. We are doing the same thing that we are asking them to do. So we are a company that whatever the challenge is going forth, we work just as hard to push it out there. We believe in teamwork. We believe in having a family type of environment with our company and our clients that we have under the brand. It is very important that everyone matches the brand. If everyone doesn’t match up with the brand, the brand can get torn. So that’s something to think about as well.

Our company is very straight forward. We don’t sugar coat anything. We tell you and give it to you just like it is. A lot of companies wait until things start f—king up before they fix it. With a lot of artists, when sh-t hit the fan, that’s when they want to try to do damage control or something. We do damage control the time that we sign on the dotted line. There’s no reason for waiting. If you want to be successful in life, sometimes you have to do things that you normally wouldn’t do. You have to challenge yourself and your client to have homework assignments. I’m the type of publicist that put their clients on homework assignments. They all know you are going to have homework assignments. Every week you have to look up a new word in the dictionary. You have to challenge your vocabulary. If not, you’re just going to be talking like a regular person. We are so much more than that. It doesn’t matter how much schooling you had or if you went to college or not. You still have to be educated in your craft and with the surroundings that you’re with. So we’re one of those companies.

You’ll see some celebrities that have been out there forever and they don’t know how to articulate a certain sentence. Or they will mumble certain words because they’re not trained. Their publicist and their management are not teaching them how to be ready for a press release or how to be ready for a conference. They can do a concert. They can perform all day. But, when it comes down to doing press releases and press conferences and all that, they are not ready. So, who’s winning?

That’s why people make fun of so many people or end up on MediaTakeOut over stupid stuff. The PR and the management is not preparing their clients for what not to do. Or sometimes they do it for a stunt. Like, hey let’s get them out in the media. They’ll let you go out there looking ratchet. But at the end of the day, you mess up your brand. You mess up the message you’re trying to reach to the masses because of the small things you thought wouldn’t be as big. They become bigger because so many people will see it and will always remember that. Just like the celebrities that have naked pictures out there. You’ll never forget those particular celebrities that have those naked pictures out there. It’s out there on the web and at any time you can go check it out.

Bels: And the videos…

Jakeem: Yes. So, you are the only one that can determine the brand and the last thing you want people to remember. Do you want to be remembered as the person who has a sex video? Or do you want to be the person that was about their business and help other people to go to the next level? That’s the question people got to ask themselves.

Bels: So would you say, like the Kim Kardashian and Ray J tape, her career kind of skyrocketed after that. Now she’s a multi-millionaire. What are your thoughts on that? That’s a different type of scenario…

Jakeem: Yes, that’s definitely a different type of scenario. With that, a lot of stuff gets planned. They know well, “oh let me get my name out there and help my family.” So, they knew the sex tape once it got out there, that people are going to be looking her up and look at her as a model and because Ray J already had a name. So with that attachment (and her family already had money), that made it bigger than what it was. So like I said, some people plan what they’re going to do and what they are going to leak out.

Everybody knows somebody in the media. People know people from TMZ. People know people from MediaTakeOut. It’s not hard. All you have to do is just go online and there’s a number. They can contact them and work it out so they can get a quick check. So wouldn’t you want to get paid for leaking out your video? That’s some of the ways they look at it…to each its own. I know none of my clients will do that. They know we don’t play that. At my company, we like a good clean image. Yes, we know from time to time there’s going to be people that are going to act up in the brand. But, that’s when you got to “X” them. It’s simple as that because sometime people can put on a facade and you may not even see it. So, there have been times that I’ve had clients that I brought onboard and made the announcement. And then, after working with them after a month or so, I’m like NO they’re not the right fit for my brand. I can’t allow people to see this ratchetness or X, Y, Z. At the end of the day, I appreciate my name. My name means uplifting. I make sure that I uplift people and challenge people to go to the next level. I want to help people go further in life. My family was the type of family that challenged me to go further. My business partners are the type of people that challenge people too. So, I can’t allow someone who thinks they are “all that and a bag of chips” in my company. You have to have that level headed mentality. So there are times where I’ve signed people and if there’s a disagreement we can let you go. My brand is more important that just getting a check.

A lot of PRs that I looked up to when I first moved here, I found out that they were fakes. Some of their old clients (that I’m their PR now) told me they sold them the dream and was just taking their check. And it’s so unfortunate that people are like that today. It shouldn’t be about the money. It should be about changing lives. It should be about helping your client get to the next level. If you help them look good, you look good because you were able successfully fulfill their destination. So if you go to a lot of PRs, they won’t be talking the way I’m talking right now. If you sit down with five other PRs, watch and see the results you’ll get and you’ll be amazed.

Bels: What if someone from your clients past put out a naked picture or video of them? How do you handle that type of situation?

Jakeem: I contact those people directly. I handle it in an email form. Sometimes you have to talk to them verbally. But I’ve had that happen. I’ve even had other people call me and hired me to help them with damage control. Other PR firms have called me and said “hey I can’t get this down for my client. But I know your company can.” It’s all about who you know and what you do with what you know. I’ve done damage control for some big names. I can’t name the names. But, I’ve definitely done some damage control on MediaTakeOut that’s for sure.

Bels: As far as your client roster, what are some of the events or things you have going on or will be coming up soon?

Jakeem: Well, some of the stuff that’ll be coming up soon…like I said I work the non-profit Beyond The Game. We do two big charity events each year. We’re getting prepared for that big charity event that’s coming up. We haven’t release the month yet. But I’m pretty sure it’s going to be early spring or end of spring when we’re going to do the next one. We always have about 300 to 400 people that come out to our events. We have different singers come out. We have auctions and different performers. One year, we had Issac Cree, Q Parker, RL (from Next). We had Nicci Gilbert, of course. You know, just a mixture of different people. We had The Rude Boys and Que (formerly of Day 26)…just a variety of people that can entertain. We encourage people to love one another and to want to help one another. The society that we live in has damaged the viewpoint of how we see things. So now people don’t have respect how they used to back in the day.

I do PR for Brandy Lynn (Nicci Gilbert’s daughter) and Divas & Wildflowers. So we have an event that we are about to plan now for the month of June/July. We’re getting to launch her. As well, I’m about to do a re-launch of my company. So we’re getting ready for that this year. Curvato (Nicci’s clothing line) is working on a big event. So, I do a little assisting since I am Nicci’s executive assistant. So I help with the event planning and different things that she may need. I’m not her PR. I’m her executive assistant but she does utilize my company’s services from time to time to help her go to the next level. Why use someone else services when you can use your executive assistants company that has the services that you need? That’s what I love about her. She supports my company as much as I support her brand and her company. That’s why we get along so much. You don’t see that too often where people like that encourage you, help you, and love you. She’s definitely a supporter of my company and what I’m doing. She’s always pushing me and challenging me to do bigger and better things. That’s why we continue to have the friendship and the bond that we have. You’ll see that more this season on R&B Divas. It’s much more to me than being an executive assistant. I’ve changed my whole life around from what people seen from me on the first season. You’ll definitely get to know who I am as a person and about my stuff. It’s boss season! We’re leaving no prisoners in 2013.

Celebrity Fathers & Sons Who’s Making Bank Together

Will & Jaden Smith @ 'After Earth' Press Conference in Japan

Will & Jaden Smith @ ‘After Earth’ Press Conference in Japan

Fathers Day is this weekend, June 16.  Often men complain that they don’t get recognized enough, so this is one day when its truly all about them.  For those of us lucky enough to have our fathers, step-father, or some fatherly-figure in our lives, use the day to celebrate everything about them. We know, for boys,  it is difficult to handle dads at times. The tough exterior can intimidate the youngins’. But it’s those stern and authoritative characteristics that makes young boys appreciate what they bring to their upbringing.  For a son, many life lessons can be learned from their father.  Dads are supposed to be there to teach their kids how to change a flat tire, cut the grass, how to treat a woman, etc.  Also, in some cases, dads who have made successful careers for themselves, can help their sons their own careers (whether they want to follow in their footsteps or not).

In Hollywood, the father and son dynamic can be intriguing.  Although we don’t see many African-American father and son duos entering business together, in particular, there are a few that has shown us on a larger scale their love and mutual admiration.  So for Fathers Day, here are several duos (or sets) that are setting the standard in the working relationship between father and son.

Percy "Master P" Miller & son Romeo

Percy “Master P” Miller & son Romeo

Percy Miller came from humble beginnings only to become a rap mogul and businessman.  Mr. Miller has only one son, Romeo, who himself has entered into show businesses. Romeo runs No Limit Records Forever. He raps, acts, and was formerly an athlete just like his famous dad.

Morgan-Freeman-Alphonso

Alphonso Freeman & father Morgan Freeman

One of the most celebrated and talented African-American actors in Hollywood in Hollywood is Morgan Freeman.  He’s been in the industry for years and his son has been taking over the family legacy.  Alphonso Freeman has starred in several productions “The Bucket List”, “Southland”, and various other films.  With the guidance from his talented father, Alphonso is sure to go a long way in the movie business.

Clifford "T.I." Harris & sons Messiah and Domani

Clifford “T.I.” Harris & sons Messiah and Domani

It is evident on T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle that Clifford Harris is transforming his kids into becoming true hustlers.  From his two oldest sons Messiah (the writer) and Domani  (the rapper) to the two younger ones King (the actor) and Major (the actor), T.I. has definitely passed down his lessons from his array of life experiences to his kids.  Becoming household names themselves, doing work and making bank with their pop on television is setting them up for a great future and celebrity status.

Russell Simmons Inks 2 Yr Development Deal with HBO

Russell Simmons B'Day Bash

Russell Simmons will soon head back to the HBO channel.  The hip hop mogul move back to HBO is not surprising. In 1992, Simmons premiered his groundbreaking show ”Def Comedy Jam” which over the years acted as the premiere stage for many of our favorite comedians.  The show ended in 1998 but returned again in 2006.  Since then, HBO hasn’t developed any original content for the African-American community.  So, it will be nice to see what Simmons could bring to the table.

In the deal, Russell Simmons will create and develop original shows for HBO’s “first look”.  The contract is for two years.

Founder of BET Launches New Urban Youtube Paid Channel “OnCue”

Robert-L_-Johnson-betThe uber strategic businessman and founder of Black Entertainment Televison (BET), Robert L. Johnson, announced the launch of two new paid Youtube channels. The new channels, “Acorn TV” and “OnCue”, will be two of several other channels that will fall under Youtube’s new “paid subscription” plan.

Johnson’s RLJ Entertainment will now give Youtube fans the opportunity to watch “theme-driven” videos. “OnCue”, for instance, will offer urban-only content that will showcase African-American films and digital television series. All of the videos will highlight the best in action, drama, romantic comedies/stand-up, documentaries, music, and stage plays. Content will include 35 & Ticking (starring Kevin Hart and Meagan Good), All Things Fall Apart (50 Cent & Lynn Whitfield), The Last Fall (Lance Gross), and I Ain’t Scared of You (featuring the late Bernie Mac).

RLJ Entertainment created these channels on the basis of giving audiences an alternative in digital programming.  The “paid” subscription route will be profitable for shareholders, but also create an outlet for producers to air original content.

“Acorn TV” will showcase British TV-related content.

50 Cent Reveals New Business Venture; Announces “50 World Fitness”

Formula 50

What is 50 Cent investing in next?  As a man who always seem to venture into the most unthinkable industries, has made profitable strides in the fitness arena with Formula 50 and now in the boxing arena. But, apparently that’s not it.

50 Cent recently took to his Twitter account to announce “50 World Fitness Coming Soon”.  Although, this doesn’t seem to be too far out of reach for rapper-actor-entrepreneur, it does come as a surprise. No other details were given about 50 World Fitness. But, many are assuming that his love of health and fitness has garnered an idea to possibly open up several fitness centers. Who knows for sure?  If this is what his announcement meant, then this could potentially be very lucrative for 50.  There aren’t many more chain fitness franchises around anymore except LA Fitness and/or Gold’s Gym.  50 World Fitness could be the next best thing for all of us gym rats. As long as he offers a great monthly/annual registration fee and up-to-date equipment and amenities, 50 Cent may come out a winner.

This is just a speculation though. We’ll get back with you as more information is released.

Should Friends Do Business Together?; Tyler & Oprah Set Ground Rules

The best ideas often are derived when you and some friends are sitting around thinking of ways to make money. Every now and then, one of those ideas strike a cord and end up becoming a full-fledge business. So, as friends, you know become business partners. The journey of making the business successful are sometimes filled with a lot of disagreements and lack of better judgment. When this happens, the friends are now at a crossroad which oftentimes cause the demise of the business. So the question is…Do partnerships between friends really work?

We hear of stories where two friends start a business, but not being able to put differences aside end up hurting the business. Whether it is disagreements on how the company should operate, who should handle the finances, or isn’t doing their fair share of the work, these are the type of issues that can arise. So, what should friends do in this case?

Well, as you know, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry have joined together to bring several new shows to the OWN network. The two besties have established a pretty tight bond over the years. With Oprah’s television cable channel need to add more diverse programming, Tyler Perry’s expertise seemed like a great fit for OWN. This month marks the start of their joint venture. Tyler will be producing several new shows for OWN. But, many wonders if his addition will spark a new and profitable beginning at OWN. If it doesn’t, how will Oprah react?

In case you’re wondering what ground rules the two established prior to going into this venture, Tyler expressed his thoughts in the recent issue of Essence Magazine.

“The most important thing about coming together was making sure we would not lose our friendship because of the business. We had to establish ground rules,” Perry, 43, says.

He continues, “The main one: Both of us have to continue to live in our truth. If she doesn’t like something, say it. If I don’t like something, I’ll say it. And we’ll figure it out and keep moving on…”

Sounds simple enough, huh? Both parties should set some ground rules so that there would be no hard feelings if the business partnership didn’t work out. Secondly, put it in writing. Partnerships should be spelled out in a contract agreement. This way, if millions of dollars are involved, friends can just take it to court and let the judge decide. At the end of the day, you have to decide what is more important…the friendship or the business.

P. Diddy Set to Jump Off “Revolt TV” Cable Network This Summer

diddy_revolt_dc

After announcing last year that he would be introducing a new music-themed network to the world of cable, P. Diddy is getting closer and closer to making it actually happen.

Diddy recently announced that his cable network, “Revolt TV”, which he co-founded with former MTV programming chief, Andy Schuon, will make it grand entrance on airwaves in July.

“Revolt TV” will be distributed through Comcast and according to Diddy, the network will be “the first channel created entirely from the ground up in this new era of social media. We’re building this platform for artists to reach an extraordinary number of people in a completely different way. Revolt will be live, like all great moments in television history.”

While “Revolt TV” will make its debut with Comcast, Diddy hopes to expand to other major distributors and cable providers. “I would also like to encourage and to invite Time Warner, DirecTV, Cable Vision and all the other distributors to come and get down with the get down. Because Revolt TV is bringing that revolution that television needs,” Diddy said in a statement.

Dennis Rodman Enters the Wild Side of Online Gaming

rodman

NBA legend Dennis Rodman is a smart man. He always know how to keep his name relevant and profitable.  After several stints on various television shows like Celebrity Mole, Celebrity Big Brother, and recently Trump’s All-Star Celebrity Apprentice, Rodman has switched gears from the flat screen to online.

MX Digital, the leading gaming developer,  has inked a deal with Rodman to create a series of online casino games.  Rodman’s celebrity and wild antics throughout his career has set him apart from other athletes.  Because of this, MX Digital believed this controversial character was a perfect fit for their online games. Last week, Rodman began shooting digital footage in Miami.

“We are shooting footage with Dennis in order to bring him directly into the game. Rodman is a perfect crossover personality, and it’s exactly that personality that we’re making sure to infuse into the games. I have worked with Dennis for a long time going back to his dynasty days with the Chicago Bulls, and am excited to have him as a part of our business,” noted Eric Bischoff, part of MX Digital’s management team through Bischoff-Hervey Entertainment, the well-known Hollywood production company behind dozens of reality television shows.

Apparently, Rodman has a keen sense when it comes to tapping into huge revenue generators. The online gaming industry is a multi-million dollar industry. In the UK, especially, online gaming is quite popular. Recently, Rodman acted as spokesman for a top European operator. After his appearance, Rodman’s celebrity garnered over $1 million in online bets immediately following.

“I travel a lot in Europe, so I knew online gaming was big business,” said Rodman of his foray into the sector. “I’ve wanted to get into this part of the gaming sector for a long time, and this was a great opportunity.”

“I love the interactive element of games these days. Connecting with fans in a totally new way is what really got me excited about the project,” Rodman concluded. “I’m lucky to be in a position where I can try moving from one medium into another one, from sports, to TV, to games. And it’s great when something new like this takes off.”

MX Digital is expected to debut the Rodman series on mobile devices, online, and social networks in the summer/fall 2013.

Tracey Edmonds Is ‘Alright’ with New TV Newtork; Speaks On Working Relationship with Deion Sanders

Tracey Edmonds & Deion Sanders @ TD Jakes 35th Anniversary

Tracey Edmonds & Deion Sanders @ TD Jakes 35th Anniversary

Tracey Edmonds is one the most prominent female producers in television and film.  As CEO of Edmonds Entertainment Group Inc, her projects have included Soul Food, Hav Plenty, Light It Up, Good Luck Chuck, Jumping the Broom, and various other films and television shows. With numerous awards and honors achieved for her many contributions to the entertainment and philanthropic arenas, Edmonds has secured her spot in production history.

Well, it seems as though, Ms. Edmonds is moving into the digital world with the creation of a new Youtube Channel.  She recently sat down with Essence.com to discuss the new network (“Alright TV”) and what its content will contain.

ESSENCE.com: Congrats on the launch of Alright TV. What was your motivation in creating this channel?

Tracey Edmonds: A year and a half ago I started tweeting something inspirational every morning to keep people going. I got so many tweets back and had no idea how much it helped others. I realized people were really hungry to be uplifted and inspired. I had been working on a business plan for a cable network of inspirational programming and YouTube was the perfect partnership. We offer high entertainment value alongside a message, without beating people over the head.

ESSENCE.com: And you definitely are bringing the entertainment with Issa Rae and more on the network.

Tracey Edmonds: I love Issa Rae! We are doing a choir series with her to take a fun look at everything that happens in a church choir including relationships and choir competitions. Ever Sunday we also live stream church services from Bishop T.D. Jakes and many others. This network is more modern and progressive than traditional gospel networks. We may surprise people. We have a dating web series for singles. Ms. Right stars DeRay Davis and pokes fun at the prototypes men deal with when dating. Mr. Right features Kali Hawk, as a woman searching for love. Our message is whatever you are going through, you are not alone. If you haven’t met Mr. Right yet, that’s ok. Stay optimistic because one day you will.

Despite her hectic schedule, Edmonds is able to balance work and personal time all while being in the spotlight. This is evident through her past marriages to Babyface and Eddie Murphy.  Now, her personal life is in the forefront of the media, again, due to her association with former NFL star Deion Sanders.  The two are now a couple.  Some wonder if Sanders’ career in television helped spawn Edmonds interest in the sports legend.  Edmonds must see his on-film star quality because he’ll be involved with a new show project titled “Sports Dad.”

ESSENCE.com: We also see Deion Sanders, who you are dating, has a few shows on your network. How is it working with him and also being in a relationship?

Tracey Edmonds: He’s been wonderful. He’s one of the most positive people I know. On the network, Deion hosts Sports Dad where he comes to the rescue of sports-obsessed dads who are pushing their kids too hard. He’s also doing an inspirational blog. I met Deion through business and had a chance to see the wonderful man he is.

Congratulations to Tracey Edmonds and Deion Sanders on their new endeavours!

mshaw-298x300

The book, published under her Evan Grace Publishing imprint, is one of several endeavours Ms. Shaw is embarking upon through the formation of her new company, The Evan Grace Group. Although the book is centered around an African-American child, The Adventures of Maddie is catered to all races. This is quite unique in that you don’t hear of many African-American based books for young kids. In addition, the contents in the book centers around values, life lessons, morals, and Maddie’s own daily adventures as a young 6 year old. This is also great and a valuable stepping stone to help mothers positively assist in the development of their kids.

The book is the first of a series that will follow Maddie as she embarks on life as a little girl growing up. If you are interested in purchasing a copy, The Adventures of Maddie can be purchased on Amazon for $11.95 (paperback).

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Expands Into Sports Management; Signs Yankee’s Robinson Cano

jayz-wealth

Undeniably a lover of sports, Jay-Z announced the expansion of his Roc Nation imprint to begin servicing athletes with management. The inevitable expansion into the management side of sports should have been evident to many due to Jay-Z’s team ownership and creation of the Barclay sports arena. In addition, his love for the city of New York is nonchanging in that Roc Nation’s first client plays for the New York Yankees baseball franchise.

The second baseman, Robinson Cano, signed on with Roc Nation after leaving his current agent Scott Boras. The soon-to-be free agent says he is confident that Roc Nation and CAA Sports (which Roc Nation is partnering with) will see that his short and longterm goals are met.

As mentioned, this next venture into sports management wasn’t so far fetched for Jay-Z. “Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” Carter said.

Currently, the 30 year old Cano will earn approx. $30 million in 2013.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather Inks $250 Million Pay-Per-View Deal with Showtime

Wonder what former bestie and business partner 50 Cent is thinking right now??

Floyd Mayweather hit the big time.  In what is being dubbed the “richest individual athlete deal in all of sports”, Mayweather and Showtime Network has agreed to a six-fight, 30-month pay-per-view agreement worth an estimated $250 million. According to Forbes, Mayweather has ended his partnership with HBO, which generated $543 million in television revenue during his nine PPV fights. Although the deal with Showtime is “confidential”, Mayweather Promotions will be in the same stipulations as HBO’s, but may include more promotional opportunities.

Floyd Mayweather’s next bout is with Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. The fight will air May 4 on Showtime.

50 Cent’s SMS Audio Confirms Investment From Timbaland

Super-producer Timbaland has sealed his stake in audio products.  SMS Audio, the “brand” child of 50 Cent, will soon tap into the design and audio engineering expertise of Timbaland for several new products. The new partnership will increase the quality and style of future products. Being the businessman that he is, 50 Cent apparently sought out the help of the highly qualified Timbaland.  Who else better to come in and share their talents and be comparable to Dr. Dre (Beats By Dre)?!

The decision to become a part of the team was a respectable sentiment expressed by both men.

“50 Cent has created an aspirational audio brand that produces the highest caliber of headphones on the market,” said Timbaland. “I’m looking forward to working with 50 and being part of a company so eager to bring studio-quality sound to music fans all over the world.”

“As an entrepreneur in the music industry, I have great respect for Timbaland and his evolving role as a producer, artist and influencer,” 50 Cent said. “I welcome his expertise and guidance. Timbaland will be a huge asset to the SMS Audio team as we move forward with new and innovative audio products.”

This is definitely BIG for SMS Audio and will place in a very competitive spot in the electronics world.

Timabaland’s financial buy-in is currently undisclosed.  Nevertheless, he will be on hand to vote on official company business in his role as an board member.

Forbes Shines Light On Wiz Khalifa In ’30 Under 30′

Some rap critics have debated his lyrical content (or lack thereof) and are baffled by his mass appeal. But, whether you like him or not, Wiz Khalifa has proven to be one of the most financially valuable young entertainers out. After being listed on Forbes’ ”Hip Hop Cash Kings” list two years in a row, the Pittsburgh rapper $20 million plus worth is effortlessly increasing.  To no surprise, Wiz has landed again on Forbes’ ’30 Under 30′ list of young stars making major moves. This is too Wiz’s second time making the cut.

How did Wiz Khalifa gain such a strong fan base that affords him to make great financial strides in music?  Well, it could be his committment to being a marijuana smoker. As many states are now legalizing the drug, people and government can tell you that there are a helluva lot of weed smokers out there.  This movement is mainly responsible for Khalifa’s catapult into superstar status.  Not to take away from his talent though, the rapper is simple but very creative with his production choices and marketing tactics.  He clearly understands his fanbase and knows what they want to hear from him.

So what’s next for Wiz?? International stardom.  He’s ready to take his movement worldwide.  With a new baby on the way and pending marriage to longtime fiancee Amber Rose, Wiz Khalifa knows it is time for him to take his career to the next level…and get that money.

Shaquille O’Neal Launching Very Own Vodka Brand…Luv Shaq

Like acting, like clothing lines, like reality television, like premium liquors…there’s no limit to what these celebrities may dip their hands in be it an athlete, musical artist, actor or actress.

I could go on and on about who’s done whatever else other than what they really do, but I’ll get straight to it with the who this time and what now.

By way of former NBA star formally known as Shaquille O’Neal but better known as Shaq is his very own brand of liquor called Luv Shaq. His vodka brand will be produced by the company Devotion Vodka whose founder said in a statement that it will compete with Ciroc but at a “more competitive price.”

Now before you decide if another brand of vodka is really needed, the difference in Shaq’s brand just may make you think differently.

Being that he is an athlete and in an effort to stay in stride with America’s route of being more health conscious, Shaq is going to make his vodka both sugar and gluten-free. But don’t worry you’ll still get some flavor because Luv Shaq will be in coconut flavor. As for the packaging, the bottle will feature an image of Shaq with giant wings.

Luv Shaq will be on store shelves in sometime next year.
