Founder of BET Launches New Urban Youtube Paid Channel “OnCue”

Robert-L_-Johnson-betThe uber strategic businessman and founder of Black Entertainment Televison (BET), Robert L. Johnson, announced the launch of two new paid Youtube channels. The new channels, “Acorn TV” and “OnCue”, will be two of several other channels that will fall under Youtube’s new “paid subscription” plan.

Johnson’s RLJ Entertainment will now give Youtube fans the opportunity to watch “theme-driven” videos. “OnCue”, for instance, will offer urban-only content that will showcase African-American films and digital television series. All of the videos will highlight the best in action, drama, romantic comedies/stand-up, documentaries, music, and stage plays. Content will include 35 & Ticking (starring Kevin Hart and Meagan Good), All Things Fall Apart (50 Cent & Lynn Whitfield), The Last Fall (Lance Gross), and I Ain’t Scared of You (featuring the late Bernie Mac).

RLJ Entertainment created these channels on the basis of giving audiences an alternative in digital programming.  The “paid” subscription route will be profitable for shareholders, but also create an outlet for producers to air original content.

“Acorn TV” will showcase British TV-related content.

13th Annual BET Awards Are Coming Soon; Chris Tucker to Host

BET

The 13th Annual BET Awards are on the way and the network promises that this year’s “celebration of music, entertainment, and Black culture” will be “bigger and better than ever.” As the three-day event nears more and more details are being released about the goings on that will take place starting on June 28th.

Robin Thicke Out, Chris Rock In As Part of “Real Husbands of Hollywood”

thickerock

Kevin Hart recently confirmed the word on street concerning Robin Thicke’s departure from the comedian’s show on BET, “Real Husbands of Hollywood.” While many have speculated that Thicke’s decision to leave the show involves some beef, Hart says that’s not so.

In a recent interview Hart revealed that Thicke’s departure was simply due to schedule conflicts between show tapings and Thicke’s music happenings. Hart said,“Within this season, his schedule and what he was doing didn’t coincide with the show, so he opted to go and do his music. Hopefully at some point in time, we can have Robin come back and do some stuff.” You can check out the video below for Hart’s more in-depth explanation.

Fresh off of that news it’s now been announced that comedian-actor Chris Rock will now be joining the “Real Husbands of Hollywood. Rock will join Hart, Duane Martin, Boris Kodjoe, J.B. Smoove and Nick Cannon for the show’s upcoming second season.

Chris Rock’s addition to the show should make for an interesting new twist. We’ll keep you posted on when season two will return with its 12 new episodes.

BET Announces New Programming Line-Up; Past Shows Get Revamped

Gladys Knight & Chaka Khan attends BET Upfront event in LA

Gladys Knight & Chaka Khan attends BET Upfront event in LA

For years now, BET television programs haven’t done the best when it comes to competing with the other cable channels (i.e. VH1, MTV, Bravo, etc).  The “reality tv” craze is one area that the other stations have successfully capitalized off of. While, viewership has grown because of reality television and other types of programming, BET is now preparing to step up their game.

At their recent Upfront presentation, in Los Angeles, BET announced several new shows and past programs that are being revamped.  Several of  the actors and actresses came out to the Montage Beverly Hills in support of the network and also to give that added appeal to the potential advertisers that were in attendance. Celebrities present at the event were Regina Hall, Kevin Hart, Laura London, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Duane Martin, Tony Rock, Richard Roundtree, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, and a host of other celebrities and BET Network executives.

With the new and revamped shows set to launch on BET, Loretha Jones, Pres. of Original Programming, insists that the network will be the top contender when it comes to the overall “connection” between African-American viewing audience and television programs. To kick off their list of new programs airing during the fourth quarter of 2013, shows will include:

In early 2014, BET is set to premier the following shows starring Gabrielle Union and the Burns family.

The series is a follow up to the release of the BEING MARY JANE movie of the week slated to launch on BET this summer. BEING MARY JANE is a story to which millions of modern women will both relate and respond. Mary Jane Paul is a one-woman-show: a successful TV news anchor, and an entirely self-sufficient powerhouse who remains devoted to a family that doesn’t share her motivation. Intense drama and unforgettable moments unfold as Mary Jane juggles her life, her relationships, her work, and commitments to her family. Starring: Gabrielle Union, Omari Hardwick, Lisa Vidal, Richard Roundtree, Richard Brooks, Aaron D. Spears and Margaret Avery. Executive Producers: Mara Brock Akil (also Creator) and Salim Akil.

Burns BBQ – Being a small business doesn’t mean thinking small. This new unscripted reality series takes viewers into the daily operation of a long-standing family barbecue business changing hands from one generation to the next. Question:  What are your thoughts on the new BET line-up?  Do you think these programs will help BET maintain the lead in black programming?

New Vid: Bow Wow Says He’s a “Grown A** Man”

bowwow

While Bow Wow has been busy getting his hosting on as part of BET’s 106 and Park, it appears he’s still grinding out his mixtape Greenlight 5.

Even though we grew to love Bow Wow as a child rapper, the Ohio native is making it clear that he’s not a child anymore. At the age of 26, he pushes his stance on that in his recently released video for his song “Grown A** Man” which is featured on Greenlight 5. The song also features a bit of wisdom from Snoop Lion formerly known as Snoop Dogg.

Check out the visuals for “Grown A** Man” below as Bow Wow reflects on his life and career.

Even though Tia Mowry-Hardict and Pooch Hall have left the show taking Melanie and Derwin with them, two new characters have been casted to be played by Lauren London and Jay Ellis.

Check out the promo for the upcoming season of The Game below.

The 6th season of The Game premieres on March 26th at 9pm [EST].

Kelly Rowland, Teyana Taylor, Omarion Swag It Out In Black @ BET’s Rip The Runway Red Carpet [Photos]

Ms. Kelly Rowland strutted her stuff in a cute all black piece this week at the taping of BET’s Rip The Runway.  Set to air on March 20, Rip The Runway red carpet was gracefully adorned by celebrities such as Jada Pinkett-Smith and son Jaden, Omarion, Teyana Taylor, Meek Mill, and more. This years event was held at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom.  In succinct with BET’s mission to cater to the African-American community, surprisingly most of the celebs appeared in black attire this time around.

‘Showtime At The Apollo’ Returns to BET’s Centric As ‘Apollo Live’

Ki Ki Shephard, The Sandman, and an array of different hosts all contributed to the success of music’s legendary talent show. ‘Showtime At The Apollo’, first aired in 1987, ended their momentus run on air in 2008. But, during the shows celebrated presentation of musical legends and brave newcomers, Harlem, New York became known as the birthplace of music. Despite its slow demise in the later years, no one can deny the show’s impact on the music business and television.

Well, Centric is bringing it back! Renamed as “Apollo Live”, the new program will focus on the “amateur night” portion of the original show. To add a newer touch, the shows producers will give away cash and other various prizes to winning contestants.  Comedian/actor, Jamie Foxx will executive produce the project along with Marcus King and Don Weiner.

Grabbing show formats from American Idol and X Factor, “Apollo Live” will include three celebrity judges (Gladys Knight, Dougie Fresh, and Michael Bivins).  Tony Rock will bring the comedic flavor as the shows’ host.

“Apollo Live” will air November 25 at 11pm, immediately after the 2012 Soul Train Awards.

2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards…The Cyphers

The 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards aired Tuesday night with plenty of celebrities as usual in the house, Mike Epps as host and quite a few impressive performances. But even with all of that, we can’t go without mentioning one of our favorite parts of the show…the Cyphers. As expected, the heat was on and fire was spit throughout. Talib Kweli spit the hardest lyrics cypher-wise overall period…IJS. Unexpectedly, quite a few of the unsigned artists came just as hard if not harder than some of the signed artists. The artists of the West Coast Cypher went all in. The Grand Hustle artists were a bit mild mannered, but stood their ground nonetheless. Eve and DMX came hard reminding us of why they called themselves the Ruff Ryders in the first place.

Check out some our favorite cypher from this year’s show below…

“Testosterone-filled” Red Carpet Photos: BET Hip Hop Awards 2012

Bottom line…there were not enough female artists at the 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards.  Stephen Hill and Debra Lee, WHERE THE HECK WERE THEY???

The 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards are normally attended by just as many females as males. But since the demise of the female dominance in hip hop, the award show has received less participation from the women of hip hop.  If they were in attendance, media outlest damn sure didn’t see them walk the red carpet.  The only representation from hip hop were male artists: T.I., Kendrick Lamar, Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Wale, Busta Rhymes, and others.  So, in honor of the ladies (or lack thereof), here are few red carpet photos from Saturday’s event.

Foolery: Gunplay’s Maced After Altercation with 50 Cent’s Entourage @ BET HipHop Awards

Rick Ross & Gunplay

BLACK FOLKS DO NOT KNOW HOW TO ACT!!!!

Over the weekend, BET hosted the 7th Annual BET Hip Hop Awards at the Civic Center in Atlanta, Georgia. As many of our favorite artists walked the red carpet and headed inside for a few unforgettable performances, the mostly peaceful evening quickly turned sour when rival artists (Rick Ross and Young Jeezy) ran into one another backstage.

According to several reports, the two came into close contact while backstage of the awards show.  Surrounded by their security, Ross and Jeezy shared a few harsh words and things went left. Although, no one was touched and quicly deaded by BET staff, APD, and their security, the beef drifted onto their entourages later on in the parking lot.

Apparently, Gunplay, Rick Ross closes comrade and MMG/Def Jam rapper, got into a dreadful argument with an unknown out of 50 Cent’s camp.  It has not yet been confirmed exactly who from 50′s camp go into squabble with Gunplay. But, according to the video footage below (from WorldStar HipHop), some dudes apparently jumped on Gunplay. But, Gunplay being the known goon that he is, turned the tables on one of the fools and jumped back.  Police were in the vicinity and quickly sprayed mace on the rapper and apprehended him.

No word yet on if Gunplay was taken to jail and/or released.  Until the full story comes out, take a look at the blurry footage of the fight.

Kevin Hart’s “Real Husbands of Hollywood” [Mini Trailer]

Ever since he made major waves with his stand-up comedy film “Laugh At My Pain”, comedian Kevin Hart seems to keep big things popping. Following the recent success of the film “Think Like a Man” in which he starred and his hilarious hosting gigs at the BET awards show, he’s now bringing his own version of reality tv to the BET network.

By way of “Real Husbands of Hollywood”, Hart will bring to the network a semi-scripted parody of the popular reality shows being watched today. In addition to Hart, other celebrity features include, Boris Kodjoe, Duane Martin and Robin Thicke. This is sure to be a shake up to the already existence of the female-dominated world of reality tv.

The 10-episode premiere season has been added to BET’s sitcom line-up for 2013. Will keep you posted on the actual premiere date but until you can catch a sneak peek below…

Terrence J Headed to ‘E News’

It was announced back in May that the hosts of BET’s “106 & Park”, Terrence J and Rosci Diaz would be leaving the show to pursue other career opportunities. While there has been much talk as to what Rosci’s plans are, Terrence J seems to be making some moves and has secured him a new gig.

“E News” has announced that Terrence J will now co-host the show along with Giuliana Rancic. He will replace former host Ryan Seacrest who left earlier this year. About the opportunity Terrence said, “I’ve always had a passion for the wide spectrum of pop culture that ‘E! News’ covers so well. I’ve had a great career so far, and it’s all been building towards this.”

With a recurring role on the last season of The Game, and roles in ‘Think Like A Man’ and ‘Sparkle’, I think it’s safe to say that Terrence J is on the move and will not keep his face and name confined to just being a BET host.

Congrats to Terrence J on the new job!

Pooch Hall Back On BET’s “The Game”

After quite a bit of hearsay, it’s been confirmed that Pooch Hall AKA Derwin Davis will be returning to BET’s hit show “The Game”. In a tweet, Pooch said two words…

”DERWIN LIVES”

And if that isn’t enough confirming for you, he later tweeted…

“Its official… who said Pooch wont be back on @TheGameBET I

will send pics from the set to Prove it, in the fall. Love u guys…”

Well there you have it! The rumors can be put to rest…you heard it from the horses mouth.

106 & Park’s Terrance J & Rocsi Officially Announce Their Departure

For seven years, Terrance J and Rocsi has graced our tubes as the young and hip hosts of BET’s 106 & Park.   Well, all good things must come to an end.  And as such, the duo officially announced their departure from the popular show.

It is evident that Terrance and Rocsi has their sights on making more career moves.  Terrance expanded his acting chops with starring roles in shows such as The Game. He also had a role in the movie ‘Think Like A Man, Act Like a Woman.”  Rocsi is said to be moving to Hollywood so that she can audition for roles as well.  Guess, they both got the acting bug.  But despite their career choices, it is clear that their time on 106 has been a memorable one.   Check out their official “departure” announcement below:

Well, we wish both of them good luck on their future endeavours.

Tia Mowry Speaks on Departure From ‘The Game’ During Interview [Video]

Creating a wave of shock, the recent announcement of Tia Mowry and Pooch Hall AKA Derwin and Dr. Melanie Barnett Davis’ departure from BET’s The Game, many are left wondering why and if the show can go on without their main thing. While many speculated that the two were fired, Tia spoke out first saying she was walking away to make other career moves. Well she further stated her claim, in an interview yesterday morning with Carrie Keegan on VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live. In the interview she says the split was amicable and talks about her upcoming project with ABC Family. You can check out the full interview below.

As for Pooch, who has yet to comment, it’s being reported that he was recently casted in a new Showtime drama. Only time will tell how this will turn out and just what impact it will have on the success of the show.

BET Brings Out Hip-Hop’s Hottest for ‘Rip The Runway’ 2012

BET’s Rip The Runway 2012 brought out some of hip hop’s elite for this year’s fashion show.  The show merges music with fashion in a very creative way and this year will be no different. Rip The Runway, which is hosted by model Selita Ebanks and The Game’s Pooch Hall, stayed true by incorporating the industry’s hotttest artists such as Robin Thicke and Estelle.  Also, the rap game was majorly represented this year with Lil Kim, Meek Mill, Wale, B.o.B, and Diggy.

Battle of the Child’ren: Kelly vs Beyonce

I don’t know if this is a publicity stunt, but there’s a worldwind of gossip surrounding the former Destiny Childs’ members Kelly Rowland and Beyonce Knowles.  Honestly, I don’t really give a d**n.  The two ladies are talented in their own right. The unfortunate part is that Kelly has always played the back when it came to Beyonce. Beyonce has always been the bigger star. But now that Kelly has a hot single on her hands, Motivation, the buzz surrounding her is off the charts.  What do you think? Do  you think the way the media is batting them against each other is right?

Nevertheless, Kelly brought her “A” game to the BET Awards  this past Sunday. Her performance and throwback homage to Janet Jackson made non-believers finally believe.  Kudos to Kelly! If you missed her performance, here it is:

That same evening, everyone anticipated Beyonce’s performance of Best I Never Had. But BET’s first time ever internationally televised live feed didn’t quite come off as magnetic as I’m sure they thought it would. Beyonce’s performane seemed lackluster (to say the most). But at the end of the day, she’s still BAD!

In case you missed her live performance at Glastonbury Music Festival, check it out below:

Speaking of B… although the NY Post rated her new cd 1/2 a star, Beyonce’s album “4″ was released today in stores. I’ve heard it in its entirety and I think it’s good. Not her best…but decent.  Go out and cop it!
