ASCAP Deems Usher Worthy of a Golden Note

usher

Throughout his career, the eight-time Grammy Award winner Usher has definitely stood the test of time when it comes to his musical talents securing him a solid place in the entertainment industry. So much so that Usher will now join the ranks of other industry vets such as Quincy Jones, Jermaine Dupri, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, Lionel Richie, Alicia Keys and Sean “Diddy” Combs when it comes to receiving the ASCAP Golden Note Award.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) presents the award annually “to songwriters, composers and artists who have achieved extraordinary career milestones.” Usher will receive the award at ASCAP’s 26th annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards which takes place on June 27th in Los Angeles.

On why ASCAP thought Usher was worthy, the organization’s President and Chairman Paul Williams said in a statement, “Usher’s musical evolution over the years clearly proves his versatility and longevity as an artist, performer and songwriter. The world has moved to his music for nearly two decades. Happily for the rest of us, from the sound of his latest work, it’s clear that the beat will go on and on. Usher is the perfect candidate to receive one of our top honors – the ASCAP Golden Note Award.”

About the honor and the obvious power move this is on his list of achievements, Usher said, “I take the art of songwriting and music-making very seriously, so to be given the ASCAP Golden Note Award from an organization of my fellow music creators is a huge honor. I’ve been blessed to have such a wonderful career, working with some of the most talented people in the business, and I am just getting started!”

I must say that this is definitely well-deserved especially considering he’s sold more than 50 million records worldwide! Congratulations Usher!!!

Even though her songs are few and far between, Lil Kim makes it evident that she hasn’t laid her mic down. Her latest song is titled “Jay-Z” but actually has nothing to do with Mr. Carter except for the repeated use of his “Allow me to reintroduce myself” line from his song “PSA”. The track will be featured on Lil Kim’s protégé Tiffany Foxx’s upcoming mixtape who is also featured on the song.

Check out the video the ladies recently dropped for their song “Jay-Z” and let us know what you think.

Beyonce & Andre 3000′s “Back To Black” + Jay-Z, Will.I.Am Pen Songs for ‘Gatsby’ [Full Snippet]

Beyonce-Andre3000

We love it when Andre 3000 mysteriously pops up with new music.  This time around, he lends his creative juices to a remake of the late Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black”.

Along for the ride, however, is Mrs. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. The two very talented artists add a different spin to the track, which will be visually heard on the remake of the Great Gatsby movie.  “Back to Black” will also be featured on the movie soundtrack as well. Although this is just a snippet, you can tell is going to be a fan favorite.

In addition, Beyoncé’s hubby Jay-Z pens the song 100$ Bill on the soundtrack. Will.I.AM. Lana Del Rey, Florence and the Machine, and many others were all called on to bless the movies’ soundscape.

In addition to all the business ventures he’s been embarking upon, music mogul Jay-Z is still busy making music.

Jay-Z has released a new single titled “Open Letter”. The track was produced by Swizz Beats and Timbaland.

The song is sure to cause a stir considering some of the subjects Jay addresses in the song. In “Open Letter” he speaks on the controversy surrounding him and Beyonce’s recent trip to Cuba as well as what’s being said about him concerning his business endeavors with his hometown Brooklyn and is its NBA team.

Check out the song below and let us know your thoughts and what Jay-Z spits.

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Gets in Cahoots with the Universal Music Group

jayz

Last week we told you about Jay-Z’s power move of getting Roc Nation into the sports management business and it looks like since then he’s made an even bigger move with his company.

It was announced yesterday that Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s record label and management firm, will be teaming up with the Universal Music Group in a multi-year deal. Through the partnership, roc Nation will retain a great deal of independence but will release albums in addition to other projects through Universal Music Group which happens to be the largest of the three major record labels in the industry.

Jay-Z is no stranger to the working of UMG considering he was once signed to the label through Roc-A-Fella Records and being that they are the parent company of Def Jam where Jay once served as president.

About the new partnership Jay-Z said in a statement, “We are looking forward to working with Lucian [Grainge, Chairman and CEO of UMG] and the incredible team he’s assembled at Universal. We would like to applaud Lucian for collaborating with us to strike a new age deal. This agreement presents a unique opportunity for Roc Nation’s artists – being able to continue to operate as an independent label with the strength, power and reach of the best major. I look forward to a long and prosperous collaboration with UMG.”

Just when many thought he was already on top of the game, it appears that Jay-Z is about to take Roc Nation to a much higher level. What can we say…Jay stays stomping with the big dogs.

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Expands Into Sports Management; Signs Yankee’s Robinson Cano

jayz-wealth

Undeniably a lover of sports, Jay-Z announced the expansion of his Roc Nation imprint to begin servicing athletes with management. The inevitable expansion into the management side of sports should have been evident to many due to Jay-Z’s team ownership and creation of the Barclay sports arena. In addition, his love for the city of New York is nonchanging in that Roc Nation’s first client plays for the New York Yankees baseball franchise.

The second baseman, Robinson Cano, signed on with Roc Nation after leaving his current agent Scott Boras. The soon-to-be free agent says he is confident that Roc Nation and CAA Sports (which Roc Nation is partnering with) will see that his short and longterm goals are met.

As mentioned, this next venture into sports management wasn’t so far fetched for Jay-Z. “Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” Carter said.

Currently, the 30 year old Cano will earn approx. $30 million in 2013.

Forbes Reveals 2013′s Top 5 Wealthiest Hip-Hop Artist; Diddy Takes #1

forbes 5

Forbes has released their list of the wealthiest hip-hop artists of 2013 and it’s no surprise as to whose at the top of the list.

Claiming this year’s number 1 spot is none other than music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. Diddy has been going strong building his brand since the late 1990s and has managed to secure a net worth of $580 million. Even though he blazed his path through music, his other ventures such as his Sean Jean Apparel Collection and not to mention his millions of dollars deal with Ciroc, have played a major role in his financial success.

Trailing Diddy to take the number 2 spot is Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter with a net worth of $475 million. With stakes in Roc Nation, Carol’s Daughter, the Barclays Center to include the Brooklyn Nets in addition to his dealings with companies like Duracell and Budweiser, Jay-Z doesn’t seem to be slowing his paper chase down anytime soon.

Coming in third with $350 million, is the legendary Andre “Dr. Dre” Young. While his success with producing music speaks for itself, his Beats by Dr. Dre venture has a monetary voice of its own.

Cash Money’s Bryan “Birdman” Williams takes the number 4 spot with his $150 million empire. With some of today’s hottest rappers under his belt like Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj among other business ventures, Birdman’s value is sure to stay on the rise.

Closing out the list, is Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson with a cool $125 million. Along with his musical success, his ventures with SMS Audio and SK Energy, the G-Unit boss also hit a big lick with his Vitamin Water business endeavors. It’ll be interesting to see what he has up his sleeve next.

Congratulations fellas! You got to respect their grind!

Was Beyonce’s ‘Life Is But A Dream’ A Hit Or Miss?? + HBO Documentary [Full Video]

In what was deemed her most in-depth and personal look yet, Beyonce Knowles-Carter premiered her documentary on HBO this Saturday.  ‘Life Is But A Dream’ captured never-before-seen footage of her continued  highs and lows of life, career, media, love, family, and motherhood.  With a startling kick-off confession of her feelings about her father Matthew Knowles, the sincere moment was definitely a great segway into the rest of the film.

From sharing her personal thoughts on taking control of her career to experiencing a painful miscarriage, Beyonce fulfilled her purpose of giving the world a closer look into her life.  Did she reveal enough? That verdict is still out.  But, if some of us didn’t get quite what we expected, we did get the chance to see the beautiful Blue Ivy Carter.

In case you missed it, check out the full documentary below…

After viewing the documentary, as did many blog sites and viewers, there were a few questionable aspects of the film. Here’s my opinion…

Beyonce’s documentary was directed by her. First and foremost, major kudos go out to her for boss’n up and taking ALL control of how and when her image is seen. I’m down with the female empowerment movement. So, I appreciate that she’s taking an Oprah-like approach to her brand.  However, I think having control of edits and what footage wa seen, I believe took away from the authenticity of the film.  It seemed at certain points in the film, the scenes were staged.  Even if cameras were following her day in and day out, using someone else to direct would have allowed viewers to see an unbias view of the megastar.

Honestly, I’ve seen most of Beyonce’s performances on television and DVD. Even though I have yet to attend one of her live concerts, it feels like I am seeing the exact same footage over and over…and over…and over.  Maybe it’s because I’m hearing her sing the same ole songs which is making the choreography and stage sets seem repeditive. I don’t know. But, I do believe that a lot of the actual concert footage could have been left out of the film.  Personally, I would have preferred more behind-the-scenes footage during pre-production. The scene, with the head dance guy going off on the girl for complaining about not knowing how to sew a hat on her head, was very entertaining. I tend to like a little ratchetness from time to time. :)

Also, I hated that Jay-Z wasn’t seen more in the film.  I love their relationship. She is clearly head over heels for the Brooklyn rapper/entrepreneur.  When he was singing the Coldplay song to her, that was a priceless moment. It was very nice to see a man act so vunerable and sweet. It made me look at Jay in another light.  Lastly, I’m sure it was all part of  Beyonce’s plan to only reveal so much. Will we get more footage and personal thoughts in a future film project? Or in a biography?  I’m sure we’ll find out in due time her reason for only giving the fans just a little bit.

Nonetheless, I wish Beyonce continued sucess in her career, marriage, and motherhood. No one can deny that the little girl from Houston is a bonafied superstar! Not even I…

Jay-Z Set To Score Upcoming Adaptation of ‘The Great Gasby’ + Official Trailer

Jay-Z is currently in the working stages on a new film.  Not as an actor, but instead providing his musical expertise by scoring the adaptation of The Great Gasby. Although the unofficial news came from the Twitter page of Jeymes Samuels of the Bullitts, it seems as though Jay was handpicked to lend his talents.

“Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!”

During the making of the film, word on the street is that the director Baz Luhrmann played Jay-Z’s music on the set. Also, the film’s trailer incorporates Jay and Kanye’s “No Church in the Wild” during the first few scenes. Take a peep at the trailer below:

The Great Gasby was published in 1925 by author F. Scott Fitzgerald.  The story takes place in 1922 during the Roaring Twenties, the post World War 1 prosperous time in the United States.  The novel has been adapted several times over the years.

The Great Gasby is set to premier in theatres sometime in 2013.

An Age Old Question: What Is “Too Old” To Rap?

Fans (and critics) of hip hop have debated this question time and time again. What is considered too old to rap?  With many of our popular artists, whom have spent years cultivating their careers, you learn that they’ve come up in age but their talent is still there. So, what constitutes being “too old”?  Do record labels determine this? Does fans and record sales determine this? Or does just a bunch of new school haters (who don’t have much else to do) determine this?

Okay. Let’s take a look at the ages of several rappers who has maintained a good level of success…

Jay-Z – age 44

Eminem – age 40

Busta Rhymes – age 40

Ice Cube – age 43

Dr. Dre – age 47  (damn! didn’t know he was pushing 50)

Snoop Dogg – age 41

Nas – age 39

Ludacris – age 35

2 Chainz – age 36

50 Cent – age 37

Birdman – age 43

Lil Kim – age 38

I personally wanted to look at a few of these “old” artists and assess their popularity and talent to come up with my own opinion. From looking at this list (and I know there are others that are missing), each of these individuals undeniably still has a buzz. Each of them have created a brand that has (in some cases) diversified their portfolios to include other business endeavours (i.e. record lables, clothing lines, sports team franchises, movies, audio products, etc).  Their popularity spands out of the northern hemisphere into international countries giving them more power and abilities to sell records. Even when younger artists (i.e. Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, T.I., Drake, etc) seems to be overpowering the market with top charting records, product endorsements, and sold out concerts, the older guys are maintaining their place.

So, what is too old to rap? I believe when you get older your lifestyle changes. Most of the listees are married and have kids.  I’m sure their everyday lives don’t consist of throwing ones at big booty strippers. It don’t involve chilling in the streets bussing shots.  But apparently their musical content will make you believe otherwise. I’m not saying all of these artists talk about those things. But, when you hop on as a “feature” on other artists’ songs who may be living that type of lifestyle, you can’t help but think that their lifes aren’t that much different. At the end of the day it’s all about record sales, right?!  But, come on!

When content doesn’t change as you get older, I think that’s when your talent becomes questionable.  As a huge lover of music, especially hip hop music, I want to hear and feel that growth.  I want to be able to relate to the music. No, I don’t think there should be an age cap on artistic expression. Everyone should live their lives as they see fit. They should continue to live out their dreams. Artists should not let the talent fade away. Talent is a God-given thing. Rappers shouldn’t waste it.  But, rap artist step up and plainly put “act your age”.  Allow your lyrical content to show that you are in a different mental space.  No one want to hear you still talking about the same stuff you did 10-20 years ago. We simply don’t believe you.

Readers, how do  you feel? Do you think their should be an age limit on rap artists?

Jay-Z and Beyonce Denied Rights to Trademark ‘Blue Ivy’

With parents like Jay-Z and Beyonce, it was pretty much a given that their offspring, Miss Blue Ivy Carter, was already in place to become a household name without having to do anything at all.  With that being said, early on it went even further with talks of the little ones’ name being trademarked for the purpose of eventually creating a line of baby products such as clothing and furniture in her name.

Well, unfortunately for the Carters, it doesn’t look like that will be happening. According to reports, the power couple was denied trademark rights for their baby girl’s name. The reason …a Boston event planning company already has the name by way of Blue Ivy Events.

Company president, Veronica Alexandra recently defended her trademark in court and won the rights to the name. Nonetheless and either way it’s not a loss for the Carters and it definitely doesn’t lessen baby Blue’s chances at getting her stacks up like mommy and daddy. We’re sure they already have another plan in motion as we speak.

Jay-Z & Beyonce Raises $4 Million for Obama Campaign

Well, the $40,000 a ticket private fundraiser thrown by Jay-Z and Beyonce paid off.  It’s being reported that the Carter’s were able to raise $4 million for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign!

President Obama and one hundred supporters were in attendance on Tuesday night at Jay’s 40/40 Club. While partaking in Champagne and food, the building was full of pre-congratulatory spirit as everyone mingled and showed grand support for Obama. Jay-Z and Beyonce have been firm supporters of Obama since his first run four years ago. Even Beyonce said a few words celebrating the POTUS.

“I can’t tell you how proud we are to host tonight’s event with President Obama,” said Beyonce, in a stunning red cocktail dress and blond curls. “We believe in his vision.”

In appreciation for the special fundraiser on his behalf, President Obama took time out to express his gratitude and crack a joke about the similiarities of his wife Michelle and Beyonce.

“We both have daughters and our wives are more popular than we are. So, you know, we’ve got a little bond there. It’s hard but it’s OK,” the president said of he and the “Watch The Throne” rapper.

“Beyonce could not be a better role model for my girls,” said Obama

You got to love President Obama. He is one cool dude!

If you’re not yet register, please go register to vote. Elections are November 6. Remember, your vote count!

Stacking Chips For Obama: $40K Will Get You In The Carters’ Fundraiser @ 40/40 Club

Coming up on Sept 18, Jay-Z and Beyonce Carter will do their part to help fund President Obama’s campaign. According to the NY Post, this exclusive event will cost $40,000 to wine and dine with Obama, The Carters, and other VIPs at the 40/40 Club. New York is believed to Obama’s last stop before the elections.

New Music: Rick Ross – 3 Kings feat. Dr. Dre & Jay-Z

Ricky Rozay is definitely about to re-up on record sales.  His upcoming album, God Forgives, I Don’t, is said to be his best work to date.  Well, that may be true considering his next official single, “3 Kings”.  The track features Dr. Dre and Jay-Z which is suitable for the song title.  These three kings of hip hop teamed up with producer Jake One on this one.

Rozay recently sat down with MTV to express his appreciation for the song and loyalty to the Jigga man.  “Jay-Z, that’s my big homey man and from day one anything I’ve ever asked O.G. for he always came through for me, so it’s vice-versa.  He got a gangsta right here for life.”, says Rick Ross.

Designer Sues for $7 Million for Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella Logo

Copyrights ownership is big deal in the artistic world.

For instance, Jay-Z, Dame Dash, and Biggs are the original owners of Roc-A-Fella Records.  In 1995, they hired Dwayne Walker (a NYC clothing designer) to design a logo for their soon-to-be multi-million dollar making record label.  At that time, RR contracted his work for $3,500 along with a 2% royalty payment on all products sold carrying the logo.  Mr. Walker claims that this agreement was stated to last until year 2015.

According to Walker’s legal suit, RR would have made up to $7 million (to-date) in products sold carrying the logo.

Walker claims copyright infringement in his suit, filed in Manhattan Federal Court. “The logo has become universally recognized as an iconic symbol of Jay-Z, one of the most successful recording artists in the history of popular music,” the suit states, according to the Daily News.

For educational purposes, when a logo (or artwork) is created by an individual, it is automatically protected under copyright law.  But, when a person is hired under contract to design an artwork for a company, the copyright law protection varies.  It depends on the contract agreement both parties signed off on.  Roc-A-Fella Records has not publicly exposed what that agreement was in Mr. Walker’s case.

Roc-A-Fella Records is now legally owned by Universal Music Group.  It is not confirmed how UMG’s ownership will play out in this lawsuit.

Statement from Jay-Z’s camp still pending.

The Carter’s Blue Ivy Will Want For Nothing

As some of us southerners say, “honey, that baby ain’t gonna want for nothing” Jay-Z and Beyonce plans to go all out for their little bundle of joy.

In a recent episode of Oprah’s Masters Class, Jay-Z revealed that he knows his daughter will definitely be a spoiled little kid.

“I just know I’ll probably have the worst, spoiled little kid ever.”

As far as how he’ll raise Blue Ivy, Jay explained to Oprah that he’ll use some lessons learned from his mom and from raising his nephews.  And when she grows up, he knows at some point Blue will probably despise them.

“I imagine I’ll take things I learned from my mom and things I’ve learned from raising my nephews and apply that.”

“Everyone imagines they’ll be a great dad until their [kids are] teenagers. [They say], ‘Get away from me, Dad. You’re embarrassing me.’”

Awe…

“P. Diddy” Combs Is Hip Hop Royalty; Net Worth $550 Million

It should be of no surprise that Sean Combs is AGAIN the wealthiest artist in hip hop.  Ranking in at number one with a massive net worth of $550 million, P. Diddy may become hip hop’s first billionaire.  He owns Bad Boy Records.  He owns the Sean John clothing line. He owns restaurants (i.e. Justin’s in Atlanta).  He owns several properties throughout the U. S.. He’s an actor.  He’s an artist. He’s a marketing genius.  Diddy’s expansive resume and portfolio is the reason why he’s the wealthiest.  Plus, his stake in the Ciroc Vodka brand over the past few years has took him to new financial heights.  The man is BAD!

But, all great leaders need a bit of comradery to fuel the desire to be in the top spot.  According to Forbes, Diddy successors include Jay-Z (net worh: $460 million),  Dr. Dre (net worth:  $270 million), Birdman (net worth: $125 million), and 50 Cent (net worth: $110 million).

Yankee Stadium Makes Way for Rocawear

In yet another power move, rapper/entrepreneur Sean ‘Jay-Z’ Carter has mounted up with his favorite baseball team in another joint business venture. Jay-Z’s clothing company Rocawear announced last week that they will partner with the New York Yankees in producing branded signage for the Yankee stadium. The deal with the 27-time World Series champions will also include Rocawear promotions throughout the 2012 season.

About the venture, Jameel Spencer, the EVP of Marketing for Iconix Brand Group [company that houses Rocawear], says, “Jay-Z has been a longtime fan of the Yankees, regularly attends games and has even included his favorite team in song lyrics, so this was a natural partnership. Rocawear, along with Jay-Z, is very excited to be working with the Yankees for the 2012 season. We feel another championship in ‘12!”

Sounds like a win-win to us considering the two have seen success together before when they teamed up back in 2010 releasing a limited-edition “Blueprint 3/Yankees” clothing line.

Jay & Bey’s Baby Girl Lands #74 Spot on Billboard

The Carter’s never cease to amaze me.  So this little news tid-bit shouldn’t be of no surprise to any of you.

The heartfelt song release by the proud popppa called “Glory”, just a few days after the birth of baby Blue Ivy Carter, landed the 74th spot on Billboard’s Top 100 R&B/Hip Hop songs.  The song, which notes B.I.C as a “feature”, is stamped at the end of the record with the sweet cries of the newborn.  The action marks baby Blue as the youngest person to ever be listed on the Billboard charts.

Awww…that’s dope!

Check out “Glory” below:

Interesting Fact:  According to the NYPost, Blue Ivy Carter might have been the first to offically make the charts, but she wasn’t the first baby to be featured on a record.  Stevie Wonder actually recorded his daughter, Aisha Morris, in 1976 on his hit “Isn’t She Lovely”.  But unfortuately, Stevie didn’t add Aisha’s name to the credits.

How Did Jay-z Create A $450 Million Empire?

It is no surprise that Sean “Jay-Z” Carter is the second richest hip-hop artists [read here]. With a net worth of $450 million, his ability to strategically create a successful brand and various business ventures proves that this former street hustler is smarter than your ivy-league spun CEOs.

Forbes writer, Zack O’Malley Greensburg, recently penned a book about the mogul titled Empire State of Mind: How Jay-Z Went From Street Corner to Corner Office. The book highlights the highs and lows of Jay-Z’s rise to the top.  With many successes under his belt, the book also shines a light on several failed business ventures of Mr. Carter.
