Jay Z celebrated his 44th birthday yesterday (Dec. 4). Sadly enough though, the day is the same day UGK member Pimp C passed away. So, in a nice commemoration of the Texas legend, Jigga released a new version of his Magna Carta, Holy Grail hit “Tom Ford”. The remix contains unreleased bars from the great Pimp C aka Sweet Jones.
Check out the remix that premiered on Funk Flex’s radio show in NY:
Well, after long consideration by Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, the entertainment mogul has decided to continue on with the launch of his Barney’s SCC Collection.
The anticipated collection (and partnership between Barney’s and Jay Z) was met with huge criticism after two racial profiling incidents occurred at the high-end luxury department store. The cases of Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips sparked outrage in the urban community and weighed heavily on the minds of hip hop enthusiasts.
Many hip hop fanatics believed as an African-American and individual who was raised with humble beginnings, Jay Z should empathize with both victims and stand up for change. However, to change racial profiling issues at Barney’s, the first step would be for Jay to remove his collection and end his relationship with Barney’s.
But, of course, Jay Z is not the type to make any rush decisions. According to an official statement posted on his Life + Times website, Mr. Carter explains why he’s moving forward with the collection at Barney’s and his plans to evoke some changes with the treatment of its minority customers.
Read Jay-Z’s official statement below:
In the past several weeks two separate investigations were launched as a result of the wrongful detention of Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips. My team has been privy to the status of the Barneys third party consultant investigation. In continuing our research, we also contacted the New York State Attorney General’s office for the status of their investigation into both Barneys and Macy’s. Those findings are not yet available.
While I await the findings of the Attorney General’s Office, I have agreed to move forward with the launch of BNY SCC collection under the condition that I have a leadership role and seat on a council specifically convened to deal with the issue of racial profiling. I am in a unique position to use my voice to affect change to this disturbing issue. The easy position would have been to walk away and leave policy making to others hoping that someone addresses the problem. I will not leave the outcome to others. I will take this into my own hands with full power to recommend, review and revise policies and guidelines moving forward. I am choosing to take this head on.
As I previously stated, the collaboration with Barneys has always been about giving and The Shawn Carter Foundation. From this collection, the Foundation will receive not only 25% of sales, it will now receive the additional 75% of Barneys’ sales, totalling 100% of all sales from BNY SCC. Along with 100% of sales from the collaboration, the Foundation will receive an additional 10% of all retail sales from Barneys New York stores nationwide and Barneys.com on November 20th. – Shawn “JAY Z” Carter
Jay Z’s SCC Collection will go on-sale at Barney’s on November, 20th.
Jay Z is undeniably one of the most diversified entertainers when it comes to the businesses he ventures into. As such, it wasn’t the biggest surprise when he launched a sports management agency. With the building of the Barclay Center and recent acquisitions of high profile athletes, Jay Z is determined to leave his mark on the sports world.
Unfortunately, with much reward comes issues. Jay Z is rumored to be under investigation by the Major League Baseball Players Association. According to the regulations of the MLBPA, a sports agents are not supposed to give gifts are money to a player. This tactic is considered a form of persuasion to get that player to continue his representation agreement with that agency. This is exactly what the MLBPA believes happened in the case of New York Yankee Robinson Cano.
In October 2013, Jay Z presented Cano with a Hublot one-of-a-kind ‘Shawn Carter Classic Fusion’ $34,000.00 watch. The watch was given to Cano during his 31st birthday celebration in Belgium. Regulations specify that players who are already clients, should only receive gifts (over $500) after the union has been notified in writing. Jay Z did not do this.
The MLBPA doesn’t deny or confirm that an investigation is taking place. A representative stated that internal matters are not made public.
A spokesperson for Roc Nation sports agency has not responded to these allegations either.
We’ll keep you updated as more information is released.
Well, the controversial racial profiling incidents doesn’t seem to fade Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. He’s decided to move forward with his launch of exclusive collectors items at Barneys.
Despite the accusations made by two New Yorkers and authorities investigation against Barneys New York, Jay-Z is sticking to his end of the agreement to sale his ‘A New York Holiday’ collection at the high-end luxury store. The holiday collection will include several items and will range from approximately $30 up to $40,000. But, Hov’s prize possession will probably be the release of his first ever mens fragrance.
The ‘GOLD’ perfume will come in a white bottle with a gold cap. The scent is a mixture of white cardamom, ginger, grapefruit, blueberry, and subtle hints of bourbon vanilla, patchouli, and vetiver. GOLD will cost $30 (30 ml), $55 (50 ml), and $70 (90 ml). As do with other celebrity and well-known fragrances, hopefully, Jay-Z’s GOLD will offer holiday gift packs as well.
GOLD will make its debut in Barneys on November 20th. The fragrance will make its appearance at several other department stores on November 29th. International consumers will have to wait until 2014.
When he said he wanted to become the first hip hop mogul to become a billionaire, he wasn’t lying. Forbes recently released its list of Richest Hip Hop Artists of 2013 and guess who landed at number one.
Again, trampling over all other artists in hip hop, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs reclaimed his number one spot by racking in $50 million this year. For years now, he has dominated the hip hop industry with various business ventures which has all proven to be very profitable. But outside of music, his Sean Jean clothing line, and his newly created Revolt channel, the alcoholic beverage industry is what has catapulted him into King of All Bosses status.
The Daigeo Ciroc Vodka has become a staple within the hip hop nightlife scene. With the help of DJ’s, celebrity endorsers, and Diddy’s own marketing expertise, the New York Bad Boy has branded the product so strategically that you can’t help but recognize it and ask for Ciroc when you want to get your drink on. Also, its wide variety of flavors has proven to be a hit amongst drinkers.
Our boy, Jay-Z ranked number two with $43 million. But that’s no sweat off Hov’s back. Jay-Z and his wife Beyonce’s combined household income of $95 million confirmed their spot as the #1 Highest-Earning Celebrity Couple of 2013.
Surprisingly, one hip hop artist (who happens to be a woman) help round out the top five. Congrats to Nicki Minaj for a job well done and for also beating out her own boss Bryan “Birdman” Williams!
1. P. Diddy = $50 million
2. Jay-Z – $43 million
3. Dr. Dre = $40 million
4. Nicki Minaj = $29 million
5. Birdman = $21 million
In a bizarre accident involving celebrity bodyguard, Norman Oosterbroek, authorities are still unsure why he was found acting eratic in a Miami mansion.
On Monday, Oosterbroek was tasered by authorities after being allegedly harassing Markus and Christiana Jung. They were the owners of the mansion and the ones who called 911. According to their story, 43-year old Oosterbroek was fighting and ingesting a strange substance all while acting erratic in the nude. Officers claim they were trying to break-up the fight and decided to use a Taser. Oosterbroek was taken to Baptist Hospital, but died a short time after arriving.
Officers aren’t sure why Oosterbroek was even at the couple’s mansion. However, when the Miami Police approached him, he was very violent, uncontrollable, and unstable. Oosterbroek’s wife has refuse to make a statement at this time. The two share one small child.
Reports state that Oosterbroak was a known drug abuser who’s been in and out of rehab for years. He was often seen protecting the lives of many of our high-profile celebrities such as Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, and Kanye West. Oosterbroek got his big start as a bodyguard for Nelson Mandela.
In case you didn’t attend the 2nd annual “Made In America” in Philadelphia, you will soon have an opportunity to catch it.
Over the Labor Day weekend, Jay-Z’s weekend-long music festival went underway with a host of artists. The artistry covered all genres of music from rock, R&B, rap, and more. Artists who hit the stage this year included Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Imagine Dragons, Nine Inch Nails, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Deadmau5, and many others. The outdoor concert was established to give music fans a collective experience of various music types. Well, for everyone who missed out on the event, you will soon get a chance to see it all unfold on television.
On October 11, Ron Howard will debut a behind-the-scenes documentary of the “Made In America” festival. The documentary will air on Showtime (check your local listings for time). The film will give viewers an opportunity to see their favorite artists/groups and hear them tell how they’ve managed to “make it in America.”
The documentary will, however, be premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on September 7.
In related news, this weekend Beyoncé and Budweiser caught some slack after her set was cut short via the live stream. Beyoncé stans were in an uproar when they only got the chance to see just 8 minutes of her performance. Of course, social networks (i.e. Twitter) exploded with angry comments. SMH…
No public explanation has been made by Budweiser, the sponsor of the live stream.
Jay-Z released the official video to his first joint off of Magna Carta Holy Grail, “Holy Grail“. The video, which features Justin Timberlake, is a pretty dark video that encompasses all things art and beauty. Interestingly, the Jay and Justin recorded their parts separately. But, editing techniques and slow switches with the lyrics brought both parts together seamlessly.
Check it the official video directed by Anthony Mandler:
Rumors are swirling around about how not only is he one of the best lyricist ever, but Jay-Z is a great boss too.
According to Allhiphop.com…
Jay Z is making it rain! Fresh off the release of his 12th solo album. Magna Carta…Holy Grail, the music and business mogul has been showing his gratitude with lots of zeros. “Earlier this year he handed out $50,000 bonuses to everyone in his company, which includes assistants and very low-level people,” a Jay Z employee tells Star. “He even promised another bonus for Christmas.”
“He’s extremely generous – most celebrities are super cheap when it comes to running their businesses,” says the insider. “He knows if his employees are happy, it will benefit him in the long run. His only demand was for everyone to have fun with the money.”
This is so very true. Most companies that suffer losses or unmotivated workers are ones that don’t appreciate their workforce. Employees who are given incentives, good health benefits, etc are usually thankful for their job and are willing to put in the extra work to get the job done. So kudos to Jay-Z! If this is true, he truly understands what it means to be an “overall” great person and businessman.
With Jay-Z, his rap lyrics are often misinterpreted and given meanings by those who listen. However, in his song “Picasso Baby”, he does it again by relating his rap form to the abstract and expressive nature we often see in paintings. With Picasso being one of his favorite painters, Jay-Z titles the song accordingly and will soon give fans a greater appreciate to its words and meaning.
On August 2, immediately following his scheduled appearance on ”Real Time with Bill Maher” show, Jay-Z will air a special documentary-type film. “Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film” will show Jay-Z giving a special six-hour performance of the song. The performance was taped at the Pace Gallery in New York. Special invited guests got a chance to see the artist/businessman conduct an exhausting-but-artful performance of the Magna Carta Holy Grail track repeatedly for several hours.
“Rap is thinking out loud, and you’re putting your fears and your vulnerabilities and your insecurities to music,” Jay Z says in the trailer. “Concerts are pretty much performance art, and a smaller venue is a bit more intimate, so you feel the energy of the people.”
Check your local listings for the actual air time.
While on his press run for Magna Carta Holy Grail, Jay-Z stopped by Hot 97 to chat with old friend Angie Martinez. Angie is undisputedly one of the few radio personalities that Hov will even allow to interview him. Given that their friendship goes way back, Jay-Z is comfortable around Angie and normally has no problems answering her questions.
This interview prompted a lot of questions in which Jay-Z had no problem answering. But, being that STACKS Magazine tend to focus on building success, hearing him talk about money and business was my highlight of their discussion. Here are a few of those quotes:
When asked about MCHG and the RIAA changing their rules…
“If you did 500,000 digital, 200 thousand, whatever the metrics is, they should certify what’s digital. It should’ve been happening. I was just the agent of change.”
If he’s surprised about the business moves he’s able to make happen…
“It’s a bit of business acumen and it’s a bit of believing I can and not being afraid to fail. That holds a lot of people back, that fear of failure.”
If he hates failing…
“I’m a person that loves winning. [But] I don’t hate to lose. That’s a different personality trait. Some people hate to lose and that drives them.”
Whether or not he could live without money…
“I don’t need money… I think success is just being able to do what you want to do on your terms.”
One of the most interesting questions asked was regarding his old friend and business partner, Damon Dash. Since Damon has been in the news lately regarding his financial issues, many people wondered if Jay-Z worried about or even talked to him.
“The thing we built , you can’t take that away so no matter what, the love is still there. Because what we’ve done will forever be stamped in history… We created something that’s gonna go down forever. So I can only have love for Dame. I just don’t know where we are in our life–We’re not the same two men at that time when we gelled in that way. I haven’t seen him in a while. I have ultimate confidence in him that he’ll find his way ’cause he’s an amazing and smart guy…. He’s a hustler and he’s highly intelligent, so I always root for him and always believe that he’ll find his way out of it. But I can’t control what happens life.”

On July 4, Samsung allowed 1 million Galaxy owners the opportunity to be the first to receive Jay-Z’s Magna Carter Holy Grail. The download app hit phones at 12am and for the next 24 hours social networks were ablaze with chatter about the new album. Although, some experienced trouble with the app crashing, those that heard the entire project was pleasantly surprised. Often labeled as another ”classic” by the Brooklyn rapper, Jay-Z stays true to his art form and ability to kill the game with each verse.
To celebrate the occasion, Samsung hosted the official release party in Brooklyn. Jay-z and his wife Beyoncé were seen getting their two-step on all night. Many of Jay’s industry friends were in attendance like Timbaland, J. Cole, Busta Rhymes, Nick Cannon, and Tyson Beckford. Also, his sisters Michelle and Andrea Carter came to support their brother. Other attendees included Adriene Baillon, Emily B, Raekwon, and local business associates.
Check out a few photos from the exclusive party below:
Magna Carter Holy Grail ’s official release date is July 9.
By way of a Brooklyn-wide scavenger hunt, Jay-z gave fans an opportunity to figure out the song titles from his upcoming album. Jay’s publicist Jana Fleishman, used social network to Tweet out photos of various locations in which fans were to meet her. In the same realm as the show “The Amazing Race”, Fleishman waited at each location only to hand out copies of the tracklist (in black binders) to whomever were able to find her.
But, is this the “official” tracklist or not? Who knows. If so, at least you see it hear first.
Magna Carta Holy Grail’s Tracklist:
1. Picasso Baby
4. Tom Ford
5. Beach Is Better
09. Part II (On The Run)
11. La Familia
12. Jay-Z Blue
13. Nickles & Dimes
14. Holy Grail (Bonus Track)
15. Open Letter (Bonus Track)
One man who always seem to continuing winning when it comes to strategy and business is Jay-Z.
It was announce yesterday that the Jigga Man will release his new album titled Magna Carta Holy Grail via a Samsung Galaxy app on July 24th. But, the kicker is that 6/24 is not the official release date and the app will allow 1 million downloaders to be the first to get the album free. Although, there’s been no word yet on who will appear on the album besides the Brooklyn emcee, it is assumed that some of the hottest producers will be included in the project.
It is projected that the Samsung deal will place $20 million in Jay-Z’s pockets. WOW! The announcement also hit the masses through a cinematic-type visual. In the video, you can see Jay-Z in his work element alongside Timbaland, Pharrell, Swiss Beatz, and Rick Rubin. If you’ve ever wondered what Jay’s creative process is like, take a look at what happens when a masterpiece is developed.
The album’s official release date is July 4 at 12:01am ET. For more information, go to www.magnacartaholygrail.com!
Wow! First off, we had no idea Jay-Z was one of the executive producers of the film. This was a major payday for the Brooklyn emcee. The Great Gatsby has already reached the $100 million mark in just 14 weeks after its release.
The F. Scott Fitzgerald adaption of the novel ‘The Great Gatsby’ had a huge international push from the start. Within 49 territories, the film grossed $64.4 million and secured the number one spot in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Taiwan, and Russia. As of Monday, the total worldwide box office sales are at $165.1 million. What made the film a “must-see” is a combination of things. The drama, the 3-D effects, word of mouth, the all-star cast, and of course the soundtrack. Readers of the novel were also a force that helped propel the film into such high anticipation.
In case you hadn’t seen the film as of yet, here’s the synopsis:
“The Great Gatsby” follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.”
Executive producers of the film included Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Barrie M. Osborne (“The Lord of the Rings”), and Bruce Berman.
Have you seen The Great Gatsby? What did you think?
Throughout his career, the eight-time Grammy Award winner Usher has definitely stood the test of time when it comes to his musical talents securing him a solid place in the entertainment industry. So much so that Usher will now join the ranks of other industry vets such as Quincy Jones, Jermaine Dupri, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, Lionel Richie, Alicia Keys and Sean “Diddy” Combs when it comes to receiving the ASCAP Golden Note Award.
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) presents the award annually “to songwriters, composers and artists who have achieved extraordinary career milestones.” Usher will receive the award at ASCAP’s 26th annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards which takes place on June 27th in Los Angeles.
On why ASCAP thought Usher was worthy, the organization’s President and Chairman Paul Williams said in a statement, “Usher’s musical evolution over the years clearly proves his versatility and longevity as an artist, performer and songwriter. The world has moved to his music for nearly two decades. Happily for the rest of us, from the sound of his latest work, it’s clear that the beat will go on and on. Usher is the perfect candidate to receive one of our top honors – the ASCAP Golden Note Award.”
About the honor and the obvious power move this is on his list of achievements, Usher said, “I take the art of songwriting and music-making very seriously, so to be given the ASCAP Golden Note Award from an organization of my fellow music creators is a huge honor. I’ve been blessed to have such a wonderful career, working with some of the most talented people in the business, and I am just getting started!”
I must say that this is definitely well-deserved especially considering he’s sold more than 50 million records worldwide! Congratulations Usher!!!
Even though her songs are few and far between, Lil Kim makes it evident that she hasn’t laid her mic down. Her latest song is titled “Jay-Z” but actually has nothing to do with Mr. Carter except for the repeated use of his “Allow me to reintroduce myself” line from his song “PSA”. The track will be featured on Lil Kim’s protégé Tiffany Foxx’s upcoming mixtape who is also featured on the song.
Check out the video the ladies recently dropped for their song “Jay-Z” and let us know what you think.
We love it when Andre 3000 mysteriously pops up with new music. This time around, he lends his creative juices to a remake of the late Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black”.
Along for the ride, however, is Mrs. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. The two very talented artists add a different spin to the track, which will be visually heard on the remake of the Great Gatsby movie. “Back to Black” will also be featured on the movie soundtrack as well. Although this is just a snippet, you can tell is going to be a fan favorite.
In addition, Beyoncé’s hubby Jay-Z pens the song 100$ Bill on the soundtrack. Will.I.AM. Lana Del Rey, Florence and the Machine, and many others were all called on to bless the movies’ soundscape.
Listen to the full snippet review below:
In addition to all the business ventures he’s been embarking upon, music mogul Jay-Z is still busy making music.
Jay-Z has released a new single titled “Open Letter”. The track was produced by Swizz Beats and Timbaland.
The song is sure to cause a stir considering some of the subjects Jay addresses in the song. In “Open Letter” he speaks on the controversy surrounding him and Beyonce’s recent trip to Cuba as well as what’s being said about him concerning his business endeavors with his hometown Brooklyn and is its NBA team.
Check out the song below and let us know your thoughts and what Jay-Z spits.
Last week not only did we give you the goods on Kid Cudi’s departure from Kayne West’s G.O.O.D Music Group, but we also gave you the dibs on his upcoming album Idicud.
Well now Kid Cudi is giving his fans even more insight as to what to what to expect from the album. Cudi recently released his second single from the album titled “Girls” which features Too $hort. The track which samples “Pretty Girls” by The Kids of Widney High was produced by Kid Cudi himself along with 88-Keys.
Take a listen to “Girls” below.
Last week we told you about Jay-Z’s power move of getting Roc Nation into the sports management business and it looks like since then he’s made an even bigger move with his company.
It was announced yesterday that Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s record label and management firm, will be teaming up with the Universal Music Group in a multi-year deal. Through the partnership, roc Nation will retain a great deal of independence but will release albums in addition to other projects through Universal Music Group which happens to be the largest of the three major record labels in the industry.
Jay-Z is no stranger to the working of UMG considering he was once signed to the label through Roc-A-Fella Records and being that they are the parent company of Def Jam where Jay once served as president.
About the new partnership Jay-Z said in a statement, “We are looking forward to working with Lucian [Grainge, Chairman and CEO of UMG] and the incredible team he’s assembled at Universal. We would like to applaud Lucian for collaborating with us to strike a new age deal. This agreement presents a unique opportunity for Roc Nation’s artists – being able to continue to operate as an independent label with the strength, power and reach of the best major. I look forward to a long and prosperous collaboration with UMG.”
Just when many thought he was already on top of the game, it appears that Jay-Z is about to take Roc Nation to a much higher level. What can we say…Jay stays stomping with the big dogs.
Undeniably a lover of sports, Jay-Z announced the expansion of his Roc Nation imprint to begin servicing athletes with management. The inevitable expansion into the management side of sports should have been evident to many due to Jay-Z’s team ownership and creation of the Barclay sports arena. In addition, his love for the city of New York is nonchanging in that Roc Nation’s first client plays for the New York Yankees baseball franchise.
The second baseman, Robinson Cano, signed on with Roc Nation after leaving his current agent Scott Boras. The soon-to-be free agent says he is confident that Roc Nation and CAA Sports (which Roc Nation is partnering with) will see that his short and longterm goals are met.
As mentioned, this next venture into sports management wasn’t so far fetched for Jay-Z. “Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” Carter said.
Currently, the 30 year old Cano will earn approx. $30 million in 2013.
Forbes has released their list of the wealthiest hip-hop artists of 2013 and it’s no surprise as to whose at the top of the list.
Claiming this year’s number 1 spot is none other than music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. Diddy has been going strong building his brand since the late 1990s and has managed to secure a net worth of $580 million. Even though he blazed his path through music, his other ventures such as his Sean Jean Apparel Collection and not to mention his millions of dollars deal with Ciroc, have played a major role in his financial success.
Trailing Diddy to take the number 2 spot is Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter with a net worth of $475 million. With stakes in Roc Nation, Carol’s Daughter, the Barclays Center to include the Brooklyn Nets in addition to his dealings with companies like Duracell and Budweiser, Jay-Z doesn’t seem to be slowing his paper chase down anytime soon.
Coming in third with $350 million, is the legendary Andre “Dr. Dre” Young. While his success with producing music speaks for itself, his Beats by Dr. Dre venture has a monetary voice of its own.
Cash Money’s Bryan “Birdman” Williams takes the number 4 spot with his $150 million empire. With some of today’s hottest rappers under his belt like Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj among other business ventures, Birdman’s value is sure to stay on the rise.
Closing out the list, is Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson with a cool $125 million. Along with his musical success, his ventures with SMS Audio and SK Energy, the G-Unit boss also hit a big lick with his Vitamin Water business endeavors. It’ll be interesting to see what he has up his sleeve next.
Congratulations fellas! You got to respect their grind!

In what was deemed her most in-depth and personal look yet, Beyonce Knowles-Carter premiered her documentary on HBO this Saturday. ‘Life Is But A Dream’ captured never-before-seen footage of her continued highs and lows of life, career, media, love, family, and motherhood. With a startling kick-off confession of her feelings about her father Matthew Knowles, the sincere moment was definitely a great segway into the rest of the film.
From sharing her personal thoughts on taking control of her career to experiencing a painful miscarriage, Beyonce fulfilled her purpose of giving the world a closer look into her life. Did she reveal enough? That verdict is still out. But, if some of us didn’t get quite what we expected, we did get the chance to see the beautiful Blue Ivy Carter.
In case you missed it, check out the full documentary below…
After viewing the documentary, as did many blog sites and viewers, there were a few questionable aspects of the film. Here’s my opinion…
Beyonce’s documentary was directed by her. First and foremost, major kudos go out to her for boss’n up and taking ALL control of how and when her image is seen. I’m down with the female empowerment movement. So, I appreciate that she’s taking an Oprah-like approach to her brand. However, I think having control of edits and what footage wa seen, I believe took away from the authenticity of the film. It seemed at certain points in the film, the scenes were staged. Even if cameras were following her day in and day out, using someone else to direct would have allowed viewers to see an unbias view of the megastar.
Honestly, I’ve seen most of Beyonce’s performances on television and DVD. Even though I have yet to attend one of her live concerts, it feels like I am seeing the exact same footage over and over…and over…and over. Maybe it’s because I’m hearing her sing the same ole songs which is making the choreography and stage sets seem repeditive. I don’t know. But, I do believe that a lot of the actual concert footage could have been left out of the film. Personally, I would have preferred more behind-the-scenes footage during pre-production. The scene, with the head dance guy going off on the girl for complaining about not knowing how to sew a hat on her head, was very entertaining. I tend to like a little ratchetness from time to time.
Also, I hated that Jay-Z wasn’t seen more in the film. I love their relationship. She is clearly head over heels for the Brooklyn rapper/entrepreneur. When he was singing the Coldplay song to her, that was a priceless moment. It was very nice to see a man act so vunerable and sweet. It made me look at Jay in another light. Lastly, I’m sure it was all part of Beyonce’s plan to only reveal so much. Will we get more footage and personal thoughts in a future film project? Or in a biography? I’m sure we’ll find out in due time her reason for only giving the fans just a little bit.
Nonetheless, I wish Beyonce continued sucess in her career, marriage, and motherhood. No one can deny that the little girl from Houston is a bonafied superstar! Not even I…
Jay-Z is currently in the working stages on a new film. Not as an actor, but instead providing his musical expertise by scoring the adaptation of The Great Gasby. Although the unofficial news came from the Twitter page of Jeymes Samuels of the Bullitts, it seems as though Jay was handpicked to lend his talents.
“Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!”
During the making of the film, word on the street is that the director Baz Luhrmann played Jay-Z’s music on the set. Also, the film’s trailer incorporates Jay and Kanye’s “No Church in the Wild” during the first few scenes. Take a peep at the trailer below:
The Great Gasby was published in 1925 by author F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story takes place in 1922 during the Roaring Twenties, the post World War 1 prosperous time in the United States. The novel has been adapted several times over the years.
The Great Gasby is set to premier in theatres sometime in 2013.
Fans (and critics) of hip hop have debated this question time and time again. What is considered too old to rap? With many of our popular artists, whom have spent years cultivating their careers, you learn that they’ve come up in age but their talent is still there. So, what constitutes being “too old”? Do record labels determine this? Does fans and record sales determine this? Or does just a bunch of new school haters (who don’t have much else to do) determine this?
Okay. Let’s take a look at the ages of several rappers who has maintained a good level of success…
Jay-Z – age 44
Eminem – age 40
Busta Rhymes – age 40
Ice Cube – age 43
Dr. Dre – age 47 (damn! didn’t know he was pushing 50)
Snoop Dogg – age 41
Nas – age 39
Ludacris – age 35
2 Chainz – age 36
50 Cent – age 37
Birdman – age 43
Lil Kim – age 38
I personally wanted to look at a few of these “old” artists and assess their popularity and talent to come up with my own opinion. From looking at this list (and I know there are others that are missing), each of these individuals undeniably still has a buzz. Each of them have created a brand that has (in some cases) diversified their portfolios to include other business endeavours (i.e. record lables, clothing lines, sports team franchises, movies, audio products, etc). Their popularity spands out of the northern hemisphere into international countries giving them more power and abilities to sell records. Even when younger artists (i.e. Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, T.I., Drake, etc) seems to be overpowering the market with top charting records, product endorsements, and sold out concerts, the older guys are maintaining their place.
So, what is too old to rap? I believe when you get older your lifestyle changes. Most of the listees are married and have kids. I’m sure their everyday lives don’t consist of throwing ones at big booty strippers. It don’t involve chilling in the streets bussing shots. But apparently their musical content will make you believe otherwise. I’m not saying all of these artists talk about those things. But, when you hop on as a “feature” on other artists’ songs who may be living that type of lifestyle, you can’t help but think that their lifes aren’t that much different. At the end of the day it’s all about record sales, right?! But, come on!
When content doesn’t change as you get older, I think that’s when your talent becomes questionable. As a huge lover of music, especially hip hop music, I want to hear and feel that growth. I want to be able to relate to the music. No, I don’t think there should be an age cap on artistic expression. Everyone should live their lives as they see fit. They should continue to live out their dreams. Artists should not let the talent fade away. Talent is a God-given thing. Rappers shouldn’t waste it. But, rap artist step up and plainly put “act your age”. Allow your lyrical content to show that you are in a different mental space. No one want to hear you still talking about the same stuff you did 10-20 years ago. We simply don’t believe you.
Readers, how do you feel? Do you think their should be an age limit on rap artists?
With parents like Jay-Z and Beyonce, it was pretty much a given that their offspring, Miss Blue Ivy Carter, was already in place to become a household name without having to do anything at all. With that being said, early on it went even further with talks of the little ones’ name being trademarked for the purpose of eventually creating a line of baby products such as clothing and furniture in her name.
Well, unfortunately for the Carters, it doesn’t look like that will be happening. According to reports, the power couple was denied trademark rights for their baby girl’s name. The reason …a Boston event planning company already has the name by way of Blue Ivy Events.
Company president, Veronica Alexandra recently defended her trademark in court and won the rights to the name. Nonetheless and either way it’s not a loss for the Carters and it definitely doesn’t lessen baby Blue’s chances at getting her stacks up like mommy and daddy. We’re sure they already have another plan in motion as we speak.
Well, the $40,000 a ticket private fundraiser thrown by Jay-Z and Beyonce paid off. It’s being reported that the Carter’s were able to raise $4 million for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign!
President Obama and one hundred supporters were in attendance on Tuesday night at Jay’s 40/40 Club. While partaking in Champagne and food, the building was full of pre-congratulatory spirit as everyone mingled and showed grand support for Obama. Jay-Z and Beyonce have been firm supporters of Obama since his first run four years ago. Even Beyonce said a few words celebrating the POTUS.
“I can’t tell you how proud we are to host tonight’s event with President Obama,” said Beyonce, in a stunning red cocktail dress and blond curls. “We believe in his vision.”
In appreciation for the special fundraiser on his behalf, President Obama took time out to express his gratitude and crack a joke about the similiarities of his wife Michelle and Beyonce.
“We both have daughters and our wives are more popular than we are. So, you know, we’ve got a little bond there. It’s hard but it’s OK,” the president said of he and the “Watch The Throne” rapper.
“Beyonce could not be a better role model for my girls,” said Obama
You got to love President Obama. He is one cool dude!
