Three world championship gold medals later and Tyson Gay, known as America’s fastest man, is on his way to the Olympics! In the U.S trials, Gay set an American record in the 100-meter race running a 9.77 in the preliminaries followed by an amazing 9.68 (the fastest time ever recorded) in the finals.

Gay goes to Beijing as one of the most recognizable faces on a powerhouse but largely anonymous U.S. track and field team. He will turn 26 on Aug. 9, the day after the opening ceremony. Eight days after that are the 100-meter finals, which could well feature the fastest field
in history.

Only four men have run 100 meters in under 9.8 seconds. Three of them will be in the final if Gay settles into the blocks against Jamaica’s current and former world-record holders, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell.

The plot lines form a web: Bolt has beaten Gay, Gay has beaten Powell, Bolt and Powell have beaten each other.

“A huge showdown,” Gay says.

The Aug. 8-24 Beijing Games will be Gay’s first. For more information on Tyson Gay and his track-and-field career, click here.
