After an EKG, a MRI and the recommendations of four specialists, 33-year old Cuttino Mobley who was recently traded to the New York Knicks has decided to retire from the NBA due to a worsened case of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a disease in which the heart muscle thickens abnormally, therefore reducing the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively to the body.

The 11-year veteran announced his decision at a press conference yesterday.

“The specialists I’ve seen made it clear that my heart condition has gotten worse and I couldn’t continue to play professional basketball without putting my health and life in serious danger,” Mobley said. “As much as I want to keep playing in the NBA, I have no choice but to follow the advice of my doctors and step away from the league. The doctors said to not chance it and I feel as though they’re right, having an 8-year old son, having a long life ahead of me, it’s the smart thing. It’s a tough thing to swallow, but things in life happen, but you have to keep going.”

Throughout his career, Mobley played with the Houston, Orlando, Sacramento and the Clippers. With the recent trade, he was expected to become the Knicks’ starting shooting guard.
