The R&B singer known as Teena Marie is dead at the age of 54. Born Marie Christine Brockert, Tina or Teena Marie had two albums go platinum at the height of her popularity in the 70s and 80s.

Teena Marie’s body was discovered by her daughter and the singer apparently died in her sleep. There is no cause of death confirmed, but CNN reports that Marie’s publicist states that she suffered from a grand mal seizure last month.

Teena Marie last tweeted on Christmas day, with one of her final tweets quoting another music legend, Sarah Vaughn:

MsTeenaMarie: Sarah Vaughan “May You never grow old, and may I never die”.

Her big hit was ‘Lovergirl’, a single that came out in 1984 and it to the number four spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Teena Marie released 13 studio albums in her music career. She went by the nickname of Lady Tee and was still performing up until her death. In 2010, she remained a headliner on the Las Vegas Strip, making regular appearances at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Teena Marie is survived by her daughter, Alia Rose who sings under the name of Rose Le Beau.
