Music Review: Murs (@murs) x ¡Mayday! (@maydaymusic) – Mursday

¡MURSday

Murs is synonymous with collaboration. Collaboration is a part of the mentality of his crew Living Legends. In fact, he started in the group 3 Melancoly Gypsies. That collaborative mind evolved into situations like Felt (with Slug) and his fun times with 9th Wonder (Murs 3:16, etc.). His album with Fashawn, and the alt-rock/hip hop hybrid of White Mandingos, has only kept him in the collective conscience. His co-opt album with Thus, him teaming up with ¡Mayday! on Mursday made perfect sense.

As expected, the energy is kept up throughout this album. While “Tabletops” sets the scene, tracks like the horn blazed “My Own Parade” and the socially comical “Bit Coin Beezy” keep the presentation going. Yet, it doesn’t stop there.  Songs like “Zones” makes sure that people keep up with the ebb and flow of this album. With the gift of synergy, the performances on this album seem to fall together in the right place.

A great thing about this album is that the quality stays as the pace changes.  “You Again” gets sentimental with its subject matter. But, there is no change in its ability to bump in speakers. Additionally, “Serge’s Song” Spanish inquisition works within the listening adaptability of this album. As spacey as it gets with its grooves, “Here” is still a pretty good song. Even though the mood, bpm’s, or language may change, the music remains highly listenable.

Mursday is going to be a dope album meant for the masses but only received by a select few. The music is consistently instrumental and focused throughout. Murs and ¡Mayday! collaborate to make the situation work. Be forewarned, though:  this is not an album of boom bap and soul samples. Mursday gives listeners music made for auditorium performances. Murs has mastered the art of constructing the collaboration album. By seamlessly meshing with the ¡Mayday! sound, he kept up by keeping true to himself.
