The online auction house Auctionata set a new world record with the sale of an Imperial Chinese clock for 3.37 million euros (3.83 million USD).  This clock is now recognized as the most expensive object ever sold on Auctionata.com, the pioneer in livestream auctions.

The Imperial Chinese clock is from the Guangzhou workshop. It is one of only a few most sought-after art works from the Qing Dynasty. This marks the first time the clock(s) have been available for sale on the art market. The clock features the magical mountain Penglai (or the the home of the “Eight Immortals” of Taoism. The mountain and waterfall is engraved with small figures which represents the Eight Immortals, their attendants, and the Three Star Deites. It is equipped with automation and music creates movement throughout the entire art piece, from its ying yang symbol to the pagodas and waterfall.

The lucky collector of this rare item was Liu Yiqian from Shanghai. Liu is a well-known businessman and investor who owns one of the most important art collections in China. His last highly publicized purchase was that of the “chicken cup,”a small porcelain cup from the Ming dynasty, for $36 million US dollars. Liu says he’s happy with Auctionata for operating auctions via livestream. “It’s just so convenient, even over an iPhone app,” stated Liu Yiqian.

The Imperial Chinese clock garnered over 1,000 auction participants from 35 countries. Within the last few minutes of the auction, there was a bidding war between auctioneers from Shanghai, Beijin, Hong Kong, and New York.
