Joe and Evelyn Garcia told KRGV in Houston, TX that they were denied financial assistance for their child suffering from cancer. Joe stated that the family was initially offered and approved for the funding by the Ronald McDonald House of Houston, but was revoked because Joe had a criminal record. The family did receive funding when the Garcia baby had brain surgery back in February 2015 in Corpus Christi. However, she was later denied in Houston where she would undergo chemotherapy.

“They told us that it wasn’t going to be approved, that it was out of the question,” said the father, of Harlingen.

Joe had misdemeanor crimes ranging from assault to DWI however stated he had not been in trouble the last charges dated back to his teen years. Evelyn explains, “My husband had to take medical leave since January 2, 2015 due to a severe hand injury and I had to quit medical school to support and take care of my daughter.

The Ronald McDonald House sent out a statement about the situation, claiming that they do have a strict policy regarding background checks:

“RMHC, through the Ronald McDonald House program, offer families with sick children a place to stay while their child is receiving medical treatment. Families are under tremendous stress and strain as they work to support their child. Given the communal living environment and out of an abundance of caution, Chapters may elect to do background checks on all families referred for accommodation. If a background check reveals conviction for assault, crimes against children or family violence, as well as other violent criminal activity, then in the best interest of all families staying in the House the family would be asked to work with their hospital social worker to find other accommodations.

RMHC holds compassion for each and every family caring for a seriously ill child. Local Chapter staff are focused on providing a supportive communal environment for families with the stability and resources needed so they can focus on the health and well-being of their children.”
