Barbara Byrd-Bennett will be charged with corruption after being charged with mail and wire fraud. Byrd-Bennett plead guilty to 66 counts of fraud after being involved in a scheme to steer $20 million in contract and bids. Byrd-Bennett stated that she takes full responsibility for her actions and all 66 charges (that holds 20 years a piece per charge).

She was appointed to the position by former Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2012 who recently stepped down after a federal investigation he was also involved in. The indictment alleges that one email from Solomon to Byrd-Bennett said, “If you only join for the day, you will be the highest paid person on the planet for that day.” In another email, he allegedly said: “When this stint at CPS is done and you are ready to re re re retire, we have your spot waiting for you.

Before Byrd-Bennett even started her job as CEO of Chicago Public Schools, she set up a scheme to get a 10 percent kickback on all the CPS contracts. Her reasoning was noted in one of several emails that she wanted to set up a college fund for her grandsons and hit the casinos.
