Jay Z is one of the nominees for the 2017 Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Brooklyn native is making history by being the first rapper EVER to be considered for this highly coveted nomination.

Songwriters are worthy of being inducted after writing multiple hit songs for no less than 20 years. Jay Z, of course, made his mark in 1996 with the debut album Reasonable Doubt. The founder of Roc Nation went on to establish smash hits like “Empire State of Mind” and “Run This Town” featuring Rihanna and Kanye West.

Members of the Songwriters organization can cast votes for three non-performing and two performing songwriters. Votes must be submitted by December 16. The official induction ceremony will be held in New York on June 15, 2017.

Jay Z will be joined by other nominees, which include Madonna, Babyface, George Michael, Bryan Adams, Kool & the Gang, and more.
