The social music revolution has definitely begun according to Last.fm. This music site pays unsigned artists royalties for every song played and downloaded on this site. The program, first announced in January 2008, now has over 70, 000 artists and indie labels signed up and 450,000 tracks uploaded.

Last.fm’s goal was to offer an alternative option to how artists receive their royalty payments. Most royalty payments are distributed from royalty-collecting agency’s like ASCAP and BMI. With this new service, an artist can cut out the middle man, receive royalty checks directly, and increase their royalty rate.
