APS cheating scandal teachers face 20 years….

As the Atlanta Public School cheating scandal comes close to an end, some teachers may face the ultimate penalty.

Prosecutors are using Georgia Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) to accuse former APS leadership and educators. The scandal went public back in 2009 after a pair of ambitious reporters at the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC) uncovered the story. A former AJC writer noticed remarkable gains in student scores after she discovered an article in 2008. Half of the schools fifth-graders had failed the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT), but during a retake in the same year passed and 26 scored at the highest level.

The state of Georgia conducted its own investigation, which in 2011 uncovered cheating at 44 schools that involved at least 178 educators, according to The New York Times.
